1851 census
« on: Saturday 29 November 08 02:00 UTC (UK) »

Hi:

I'm not sure this is even possible, but I'm looking for a James MCKENZIE, born Conon village, 1824, with sister Mary b 1827, same place, in the 1851 census.

In 1861 they are still in Conon, with Mary's illegitimate son Roderick, born Turriff.

I have Roderick coming forward, but would like to try and go back with Mary and family.

Thank you, Linda

Hi Linda

For ref: Conon Village is in the parish of Urquhart and Logie Wester.
In 1851 there are 2 x James McKENZIE's in that parish - one is a tailor with a 13 yr old sister Mary. So not your chap. Your one was a labourer in 1861 whose sister mary was 34 in 1861.

the other one is this :

1851: Village of Conon -
Parish: 84, ED 11, HS , pg 14
Head: Rodrick McKENZIE 60, Mason. b Fodderty, Rossshire
Wife; Ann McKENZIE 36?, b Lochbroom, Rossshire
Son: James McKENZIE 29, Farm lab, b Urquhart, Rossshire
Dau: Catherine McKENZIE 12, Farm lab, b Urquhart, Rossshire
Son: John McKENZIE 8, Scholar, b Urquhart, Rossshire
Son: Andrew McKENZIE 4, b Urquhart, Rossshire
Dau: Jess mcKENZIE 2, b Urquhart, Rossshire

Cheers

Ambly - thank you so much.  I would think this one is mine considering Mary named her baby Roderick.

Wonder where she is in 1851?

Baby Roderick came to Canada in 1911, age 50, where some of his decendants still live today.

Hiya Linda,

I'd be interested to know if you trace Roderick's wife Ann, as I always have an eye out for "strays" from Coigach in Lochbroom Parish.

My guess is Ann was a second wife for Roderick, given her age noted as 36, and son James 29. Was she the Ann MacLeod noted in the IGI as marrying a Roderick MacKenzie 27 April, 1837 in Urquhart And Logie Wester Parish?

If Ann was second wife, it was not unusual for first daughter named for deceased first wife, suggesting Roderick's first wife may have been a Catherine.

Donald.

Primarly Coigach, but also other parts of Ross and Cromarty.

Donald:

It would certainly all seem to "fit", but we all know the dangers of doing that!

I probably wouldn't bother tracing Ann - this connection is already fairly distant. These are not my blood line, but I do know the family here in Canada that comes from Roderick. One of them is my husbands uncle (his aunt is the blood line).

Thanks for the suggestion.
