Hello
I'm not sure if anyone can provide me with any help in identifying a church or district from a GRO Reference.
I have found the following GRO references and had a brief opportunity to look for the marriage entries at the registry office - although could not find the entries. Obviously i am trying to avoid paying £7.00 for Certificates and therefore wondered if anyone with local knowledge or other resources could help me locate the entry details in order that i may look them up?
Marriages - Hinckley
John Edwards Webster and Mary Ann Truslove - HINCKLEY JUN Q 1877
Thomas Alsop and Elizabeth Allen - HINCKLEY DEC Q 1871
Thomas Payne and Mary Ann Peat - HINCKLEY DEC Q 1872
William Payne and Elizabeth Barnes - HINCKLEY DEC Q 1878
Henry Martin and Eliza Roberts - HINCKLEY JUN Q 1857
William Payne and Mary Ann Bailey - HINCKLEY DEC Q 1863
John Burton and Hannah Clay - HINCKLEY JUN Q 1874
Henry Wood and Gertrude Elizabeth Whittley - HINCKLEY SEP Q 1904
Frederick Payne and Ada Lois Marshall - HINCKLEY DEC Q 1927
I have skimmed through St Mary's Hinckley and also St Catherines Burbage but could not immediately see any of these. I know that the HINCKLEY registration area covers a number of towns and villages, as well as alternative churches, and therefore would be grateful if anyone could point me to the right Church or area so that i may look the entries up without the need for ordering Certificates?
Thanks in advance
TB

Hi TB
Are you able to find any of the couples on the nearest censuses which may show the area they were living in and narrow down the church or area at all.

Yes - most of them suggest Hinckley or Burbage - that is why im surprised i cannot find the marriage entries!

Thanks for looking up those.
Seems i might have to order some certificates as whilst i may have missed some in my Burbage review there weren't a huge number of entries each year to have missed.
The first entry seems correct and i will look that up again.
Thanks

Mike
You are indeed correct.
I had mixed my marriage dates round.
William Payne married twice. First to Mary Ann Bailey in Jun 1845 and then to Mary Norton in Dec 1863. Both in Hinckley district! From looking again i think that the Webster, Payne, Wood amnd Alsop marriages are probably Burbage (although i could not immediately find these in the Parish Records!). I think the Burton one is probably the Wesleyan Chapel in Hinckley and the Martin one i am not sure of although would imagine its a church in Hinckley.
Thanks again for everyones help.

The CofE churches in Hinckley Registration District that licensed for marriages were:
Aston Flamville Burbage Burton Hastings Sapcote Sharnford Stoney Stanton Higham-on-the-Hill Hinckley Hinckley Trinity Stoke Golding Barwell Elmsthorpe Earl Shilton
There were also 2 Baptist chapels, 5 Wesleyan and one each of Catholic, Presbyterian, Independent and Congregational chapels, all of whose marriages up to 1898 would be recorded in the registers of one of the Registrars of Marriage, held at the Register Office.
This list is from 1878, so there it may not be accurate for all the dates you mention, but it should be close enough to give you a general idea.
Does this help?
Good luck anyway.

I'm so pleased I happened across this post, as I haven't bene on RC for a couple of months.
This could be my family, the Payne side of my family are form Hinckley, and the Hurst side from Stoke Golding. However there are so many different branches of Paynes in the Hinckley area and freuently with the same first names, it's hard to tell.
The furthest back I have at this point is James Payne (17??) married to Rachel Lamb (?).
I am descended from their son James Payne (1782-1844) who married Ann Wood (1781-1866) in Hinckley, we think in 1803.
I have attached a copy of a family tree that was drawn up by a family member some years ago in Hinckley. We did some research last year on the tree, since there is often little information, and managed to confirm most of it using online resources, which of course were not available when it was drawn up, presumably using family bibles and parish records.
Hope this helps. I do have more details on many people on the tree, but as yet not online in my database. It would be nice to find a connection wouldn't it. So far I have not been able to find any relatives from other parts of the tree.

I am researching the following families: Hurst / Payne - Leicestershire / Warwickshire / Worcestershire Toon(e) - Leicestershire Batchelor / Foster - Warwickshire / Northamptonshire Hardy - Dorset My web site has the family tree showing. I am researching primarily the Payne, Hurst, Foster and Batchelor lines in the Midlands. Off The Record With Debbie And Tony

Hello Tony
I have reviewed your family tree and cannot see an instant connection unfortunately! A shame really as i have two branches of the Payne family (unrelated at present although struggling to go back past the 19th century with any certainty!).
Thanks for your response though - so many Paynes....
