I am trying to trace David McWhinnie b. c1805, married to Mary Bain who later married Gilbert Patterson. Can anyone help?

Welcome to RootsChat.  You probably know most of this already but just in case.
David McWhinnie married Mary Bain on 11 Oct 1829, Liverpool.  They had two sons, Charles and David, David being born 12 May 1833 Sorbie, Wigtownshire.  The 1841 Census (SCT 1841/897) has :   
Garliestown, Front Row, Sorbie.
Mary McWhinnie    35    Grocer      b. Wigtonshire
Charles    "            10                                "
David        "             8                                 "

It would appear that David Snr. died between 1833 and 1841.

Yes, thank-you I do already have thet information, I am trying to go back another generation and find David's birth records and details for his parents.

I have searched the ScotlandsPeople index of OPR Births & Baptisms
between 1799 and 1811 and  the only record of the birth of a David McWhinnie was at Irvine, Ayrshire on 1 Aug 1808.
If this is the correct one he would be 21 at the time of marriage.  It looks hopeful but on the other hand it may well be a different David McWhinnie.
