Nicholas & Susan Doherty - Ire to Brooklyn, NY
« on: Sunday 30 November 08 18:05 UTC (UK) »

Seeking info on Nicholas Doherty b. approx. 1890s Ireland. Father Michael Doherty; mother Grace Quigg. One possible sibling: Sarah Anne b. 24 Mar 1878 Donegal (from LDS).
Nicholas came to NY and worked on Pier 17 in Brooklyn. Later he joined the NYC Fire Dept in Brooklyn, NY from 1925 - 1939. He became a citizen but never served in the military. Known addresses: 164 Grand Ave; 221 Garfield Place; 867 (or 869) Union Street.
He died 7 Dec. 1954 in Hospital of Holy Family and is buried in St. John's Cemetery, Queens, NY.

His Fire Dept records list him as single when he retired but his death certificate lists his wife as Susan Doherty.  He married later in life. Susan was married before to Henry McGrory(Grave where Nicholas & Susan are buried is registered to Susan McGrory).

Susan Doherty nee Duffy was born in Ireland on 23 June 1907 to Patrick Duffy and Mary Clyde. She died on 21 June 1971 in Kings County Hospital. Last address 670 President St. She too was a citizen. One known child with Nicholas Doherty - Grace Egan who was alive in 1971 and lived in Oakdale, NY and two children with Henry McGrory-  Francis and Mary.

My father had a prayer card from Nicholas's wake in his possesion when he died. Don't know the connection to our family as yet but as noted above, I have found out a great deal about Nicholas, just not how (or if) he is related to us.

Any help appreciated.

Have you found the record of Nicholas Doherty arriving in U.S. yet? There's a very likely on at www.ellisisland.org: Nicholas Doherty, age 22, farm labourer, born Moville [transcribed as Morelle], Ireland. Arrived 7 May 1912 "Columbia" from Londonderry, Ireland. Going to sister Cassie Doherty, 954 Kent ave., Brooklyn, New York. Father Michael Doherty, Moville.
If that's the correct Nicholas Doherty then he should appear in 1920 and 1930 U.S. census.

1942 WWII Draft Registration Card (partial details):
Nicholas Doherty
869 Union St., Brooklyn, Kings, New York
born 12 June 1888 Donegal, Ireland
wife- Mrs. N. Doherty (same address)
retired

The address here matches one you posted so looks like Nicholas married sometime before 1942.

Yes I did find that immigration record but can't find either Nicholas or Cassie in subsequent censuses.   Had also found the WWII Draft Reg Card - that's how I had that address.

He retired in 1939 and was single so he must have married between then and the 1942 Draft Reg Card.  But I can't find record of his marriage either.

Thanks so much for looking these up for me though.

Have subsequently heard from granddaughter of Susan Duffy.  Susan married Henry McGrory in early 30's and they had two children:  Francis and Mary.  Henry died about 6 weeks after the birth of Mary.  Susan took the children back to Ireland where they were raised by grandmother and uncle.  Susan returned to US and married Nicholas Doherty - they had one child Grace Egan.  All of these people are now deceased.

However, am still not able to find my connection to Nicholas Doherty - whose parents were:  Michael Doherty and Grace Quigg.

There may have been another sibling Sarah Ann Doherty (as per the LDS website).  I found a petition for citizenship 1945 for a Sarah Doherty living on Garfield Place (which is very near where Nicholas lived as well as my grandmother).

Any of this familiar to anyone out there???

Have subsequently found them on the 1911 Census Ireland but still can't tell how/if Michael Doherty is related to my Doherty line.
