Hey guys - i need some help with this topic.
My dads uncle was Called David Joseph Jones (Brother of Verdun Jones - my grandad), He was one of the many welsh men who fought in the spanish civil war, but never came back as he was killed in Action. He died in Jarama.
Basically i was wondering if any body could help me find more information on My great uncle. He was from Tonypandy, Penygraig?
I stumbled across this website at the beginning of the year. And was suprised to find a picture on the article that featured my great uncle. Its the image of the Leaflet with the 3 men on. THe only problem is id love to have that picture in full size, and would love to know if more pictures exist of the men from the Rhondda who fought in the civil war.
This is the link:
http://www.rhondda-cynon-taff.gov.uk/stellent/groups/public/documents/hcst/content.hcst?lang=cy&textonly=on&dDocName=015585
Apparently this picture also exists in a book called : Coal Society - A History of the South Wales Mining Valleys 1840-1980 by David Egan. But i dont know where to find this as its out of print.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Gary

The first thing I would like to say Gary is that I never tire of reading of the brave men like your Uncle who fought and died,in the fight for a better life for all.Have you enquired at your local Library whether they may have a copy of the book by David Egan?
Regards William Russell Jones Cefn Mawr Wrxham.

I took the trouble of phoning Tonypandy Library and they do have a copy of the book by David Egan. The Librarian also stated that she expected it to be widely available in all the Libraries of the Rhondda-Cynon-Taff Council.

Hi Gary,
Your local library should be able to get hold of any book held by any public library in England and Wales. My little local sub-branch in Hampshire gets little-known, out-of-print books for me from all across South Wales; at the moment I have a book about a little Pembrokeshire village which my library obtained from the Port Talbot branch of West Glamorgan libraries. If libraries in the Rhondda area have copies of the book you need, your library should be able to get it. Good hunting!
Regards, Lee.

Hi Gary,
Glad I could help.
Hampshire Libraries charges £1.50 per book for searching through the libraries' stocks - that's 50p when you order, then a pound when you borrow it. The item can take from about 6 days to 6 weeks, depending on if the holding library has it loaned out or reserved for somebody else. It's a tremendous help when you're trying to get information, especially from books which are specialised to a particular area. I've even had books turn up from Swansea University library! Go for it!
Regards, Lee.

Hi Gary, Just read your post ,dont know if you have read or heard of this book, From the Rhondda to the Ebro written by Alun Menai Williams its about his young life , and his time in the International Brigade as a medic he was at Jarama , if you Google his name it will tell you about him , I bought the book from Waterstones , my interest in him is that his father Huw Menai Williams the welsh poet was my grandmothers 1st cousin as I discovered though my family research ,hope you can get the book its well worth the read .
Kind Regards Mrs Griff
