FREEMAN/GHOST Families
« on: Monday 01 December 08 12:26 UTC (UK) »

hi, ive just decided to look in to my grandmothers side of the family.

The family tree is well documented but only as far back as William Freeman born 1804 Hemel Hampstead to Thomas and Ann Freeman, nee ghost. married 13 feb 1802 HH.

He was transported to australia on the 'England' 1826.

If anyone could spare some time to help me that would be greatly appeciated, Im interested in how far back the family can be traced and the jobs they had.

thanks freeman253

Welcome!

I hope that you will visit often and make lots of progress.  Please be sure to register your syrnames on our SURNAME INTERESTS TABLE.

I cannot find William on the list of Herts Transportees so it looks as though William was tried outside of the county of Herts. There are several possible candidates for Thomas on the BVRI, FREEMAN not being an uncommon name, but I could only find one match for Ann GHOST but as the BVRI is not complete there may well be others. Great Berkhampstead (nowadays just Berkhamsted) is a town a few miles to the west of Hemel Hempstead.  If this is your Ann, she would have been 45 when William was born, not uncommon then.

GHOST, Ann
Baptised - 1 Jul 1759
Great Berkhampstead, Herts
Parents - George GHOST & Sarah

Let's hope that someone who is also an descendant of Thomas & Ann sees your post and will able to help.

Hi Carin

We were all green in the beginning! Grin

The problem with pre-1837 research is that father's names and occupations are not given on marital records to enable you to cross reference with baptismal records, which pre 1813 also give very little informaton. This can make it difficult to be certain about whether you have the the right body sometimes.  This can be particularly difficult when you are dealing with a common name.

Luckily GHOST is uncommon but unless who have some proof or corroborating evidence (from a will or family bible etc) the best that you can say is that either lady born 1778 in Tring from the IGI or 1759 in Berkhamsted from BVRI could be William's mother.  It is also possible that other Ann GHOSTs may be missing from the IGI and BVRI neither of which are complete.

HALS have all their pre 1837 marriages online.

https://www.hertsdirect.org/ufs/ufsmain?esessionid=3D98D1E6E021F1291BA09197BA1B419D_1

From this index.

Thomas FREEMAN to Ann GHOST at Hemel Hempstead married -13 Feb 1802

Unless this is a second marriage, which is possible, this favours the younger Ann from Tring especially as there was a Berkhamsted marriage.

William SIMMONDS to Ann GHOST at Berkhamsted, married - 15 Nov 1784

Without corroboration, I would be inclined to check the Hemel Hempstead baptismal register just to make sure there isn't an entry for Ann as well as the Hemel Hempstead marriage entry to see whether Ann was "of the parish" when she wed.  Being "of the parish" does not necessarily mean that she was born there though, just that she had acquired settlement rights.  If you want to do this, start a NEW TOPIC on the Herts LOOKUP REQUESTS board and someone who is going to HALS may check for you.
