Shawmacelroy ??
« on: Tuesday 02 December 08 15:55 UTC (UK) »

Hello folks

Following the receipt of help from some kind people, I now have some more information about my grandfather.

Like curate's eggs, it is good in parts and I now have another query for you.

Birth cert says GF born in Shawmacelroy and registered in Scotstown, Monaghan.   I've looked online but can't find anything for this so does anyone know where Shawmacelroy is please?

Thanks all

H

Stramackilroy townland in Tedavnet parish, Co. Monaghan.
See www.seanruad.com to find townlands and parishes in Ireland (be sure to change defauly setting from exact match- to find this one I searched for townlands ending in 'roy').

Thank you.  I think my informant finds it hard to transcribe sometimes and I seem to spend ages making wild stabs in the dark.

How does the townland system work btw?

Here's some reading to understand what townlands are and why they are so important in locating records:

Thank you again.

I had found the Baronies map but not some of the other sites - think I will give up on work for today and sit down for a read and a cup of tea.
