I have seen numerous cases where the father appears to be alive on a marriage certificate when he fact he was dead.

"Father's name?" asks the vicar. "John Rolison" she replied, factually. "Occupation?" - "Labourer". So the vicar wrote it down. He didn't ask if John was still alive and she didn't volunteer the information that he had been dead for 13 years.
