Beeston baptisms (Dabell)
« on: Wednesday 03 December 08 00:13 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I'm looking for the baptism records of the children of Thomas Dabell ( could be spelled Davell or a considerable number of other ways!  Undecided ).

On the IGI it looks like Beeston has been transcribed 1813-1835 and 1841-1844 but I think I need some during and in between.

The 1841 census shows him married to Eliza and with children Elizabeth (c.1831), Thomas (c.1834) and Emma (c.1836).

Interesting the IGI has a Thomas to Thomas & Jane in both 1831 (sp. Deaville) and 1835 (sp. Devell).  This could mean that Eliza is Thomas' 2nd wife so there's another curiosity.  Also does it mean the first Thomas was buried young?  Or are they two or more different families?

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi smouse,
I've looked through the Beeston registers for you and found the following:
Dabell - nothing listed
Davell - nothing listed
Devell:
Thomas baptised 30 Sep 1835
Father: Thomas (higgler)
Deaville:
Thomas baptised 11 April 1831
Father: Thomas (higgler)   Mother: Jane
George baptised 29 Jul 1832
Father: Thomas (publican)  Mother: Jane
Anne baptised 2 December 1838
Father; Thomas (coal higgler)   Mother: Jane
Hope this helps - could be two families!

Hi Damien,
Checked the marriages for 1825 - 1835:
Thomas Dabell married Elizabeth Osbrooke
11 July 1853  Beeston Parish Church
Thomas Dabell married Jane Scattergood
26 November 1828 Nottingham St. Mary.
Hope this helps,
Paulene Smiley
P.S.  The name Dabell rings a bell -  I'm sure I've seen it with regard to research I've done in the past on Nottingham on framework knitters. If anything does come back to me, I'll let you know, Damien.

Hi Damien,
I can't find a suitable baptism for your Thomas (variety of spellings) 1801 -1811, or for Jane Shepherd, in Notts.
I looked to see if any of them were FWK and some were, but until we can find a birth for Thomas it's difficult to esblish whether he was connected with these or not.

I've also checked for a burial at The General Cemetery in Nottingham, but there is nothing.

Thomas senior was from Bramcote and was baptised there.  The marriage to Jane Scattergood does sound right in relation to the children.  I found a death for a Jane Dabell in 1839 on the BMD for Basford (includes Beeston I think).  It doesn't give much time for Thomas to marry Eliza who he was with in 1841 though but with children I wouldn't expect him to wait too long.

Strange that Elizabeth (c.1831) and Emma (c.1836) aren't found in the baptisms.  It could be that they were Eliza's children?

By the way, who is the Jane Shepherd you can't find  Huh

Hi Smouse,
Whoops! (must have been late!)
Sorry, meant to say I couldn't find a baptism for a Jane Scattergood (not Shepherd) in Notts for the period before 1841.
Yes, you're right - Beeston does come under the Basford registration district.
Trouble is there are no burials for Beeston that I have access to.
They will have them I would think at the Notts Archives - are you anywhere near Nottingham, Damien?

Hi smouse

There are some Beeston burials on-line on a site called Beeston Then and Now which you might find of interest - check it out - they have only done to 1857 currently
I checked all the Dabell names I could find (in various spellings) and came up with these:
George Deavill 11 Apr 1838, age 5
Ann Deavill 24 Mar 1839, age 0 (Thomas/Jane)
Jane Deaville 18 Jul 1839, age 30, spouse Thomas
George Deavil 21 Sep 1854 age 1yr 9mon

I have Dabells in my family tree but they are from Arnold and Bulwell, don't think they are connected

That's fantastic!!!!   Smiley

It all fits together nicely though not so nice for the family as that's quite a few young deaths for such a small family!

I'll go and find the site now.

Damian

PS. No links to Arnold or Bulwell so far.

Hi

I know a Rootschatter who has loads of information on Dabell, Deavill, etc. I will send a personal message to them to get in touch if you are not already. I know they have been to Nottm Archives as we met there one day for a coffee.

Kind regards

Jane

Hi again

Baptism Emma Devill to Thomas and Jane Born 4.7.1836 Bap 24.7.1836 Beeston Labourer

Marriage Thomas Dabell and Jane Shepherd 26.11.1828 St Marys

The marriage may or may not be the right one.

NFHS have not recorded the burials for Beeston.

I totally agree with everything else Willow has given you.

There is also a baptism for

Hannah Harriet Deabill to Thomas and Eliza Deabill Gedling All Hallows 18.4.1858 Domestic Servant Abode Carlton but I think this will be another family. Its the other side of town.

I have looked for close parishes but they are not on NFHS.They are Attenborough, Chilwell, Nottinghan St Barnabus, Wollaton, Bramcote, just in case you want to look elsewhere and don't know the local geography. I live in Beeston and go to Beeston Parish Church. There may be records in Nottm Archives which they will search for a fee or eventually I may get back there though I have been so busy at work I have not been there for about a year. I will ask the Vicar if the burial registers have been sent there.

I did send a message to the contact on Rootschat so I hope they are still active and read it. I do know they have extensive D%l information. I remember quite clearly their dilema of the multiple spellings of the name.

In your profile you only say UK so I don't know if you are local or not and whether you know the local geography.

Kind regards

Jane
