Ships - Sail and Steam

I wonder if anyone can explain this

Various relatives in my tree emigrated in the 1860s and 1870s

Those who went to USA went on what I assume are steam powered ships
E.g. The Royal George

In the same period , though two who went to Australia, went on sailing ships, e.g. the La Hogue

Why would this be? It seems the transatlatic crossing was around a week, whereas the trip to Australia was 5 months. Perhaps it was a matter of fuel?
