Lowry Family
« on: Friday 05 December 08 13:35 GMT (UK) »

Hi

I was wondering if anyone can try and help me find any details such as date of birth and mothers name for my 2 x Great Grandfather William Lowry (of Ireland).  The information I have managed to find so far is as follows:

He was born abt 1848 in Ireland
His father's name was John Lowry
He had a brother called Gibson Lowry (born abt 1845) and through a poor relief record for Gibsons wife I have also found that he (Gibson) was born in Co Monaghan in Ireland, and he died in Glasgow, Scotland.  I am assuming William would have been born there too.....
I also believe he had a sister called Harriet Adella Lowry (Born Ireland - died Glasgow, Scotland)

I have hit one of those brick walls, and would really appreciate it if anyone can help shed any more light on him for me ?

Unfortunately civil registration of births in Ireland only started in 1864 so for earlier dates you need to search for church records (if they exist). Scottish certificates have much more information than Irish ones and you should check there first for clues to a more exact place (parish or townland) in Co. Monaghan. If John Gibson, or any siblings, married in Scotland their marriage certificates might give clues as to names of parents, etc.

Thanks for the feedback.....its proving to be really difficult.  William was actually married in North Shields - and I have his marriage cert. but it only has his fathers name on it.  The only reason I got Co. Monaghan was from his brothers wife poor relief record in Glasgow!!!!  never mind...maybe I will need to take a trip to Ireland !

Too bad the marriage didn't take place in Scotland but no point in planning a trip to Ireland until you have a more concrete idea of what and where to search.

Depends on what you term Protestant! There are C of Eng, C of Ire, 1st Presby, 2nd Presby. Methodist, etc and yes there were fallouts if a 1st Presby married a C of Ire or a 2nd Presby etc....

Probably still is!!!

Any clues of any towns, areas.....anything?Huh Inspect any papers thorougly one at a time for anything!!

Most probably they were C of I or Eng, if they were Presby or Methodist etc they would probably have followed suit in UK!!

I will have a look at the documents I have again but I am pretty sure the poor relief record just shows "protestant".  I have the marriage cert for my 2xgreat grandfather but can't quite read the church name...I had assumed however it was CofE.

.....re the birth record, fantastic !  (at least I think).
My 2 x Great Grandfather was William Lowry b. abt 1848 to John and Mary Lowry however the details I have for his brother Gibson, was that he was born abt 1845...which I know from my research elsewhere could quite easily have been 1844 !  I can't imagine Gibson Lowry is that common a name !

This gives me a great start which I didn't have before as I can now try and find births for William and Harriet Adella (sister) and maybe marriage details for John and Mary in the same area.  I really appreciate your help - thank you so much !!

Gibson would not have been a very common Christian name....so now..who was he named after??

You can't quite read the Church name but what can you make it out as??

Sometimes documents can have something written on a corner or on back so look for ANYTHING!

I believe that Gibson was his mothers maiden name.  I have found the following from Scotlandspeople:

Death reference of Harriet Adela Lowry in 1881 Glasgow (I believe daughter to John and Elizabeth and sister to my William) shows her father as John Lowry and mother as Elizabeth Lowry nee Gibson.  My great grandmother was called Harriet Adela Lowry after her.

Death reference of John Lowry (died in Glasgow 1877) shows his wife as being Mary Eliza Lowry nee Gibson.  He was a widower when he died but I wasn't able to find a reference on Scotlandspeople for her.

Well John and Mary look good for Gibson...that means Margaret is a sister!! William was a son of Robert and Margaret not John and Elizabeth..

Thats really interesting.  I had assumed they were brothers because I have the 1881 Scottish census where William (and his wife Eliza) were visitors to Gibson in Glasgow.  Also, according to Williams marriage certificate his father was called John....not Robert.  As they were both born in Ireland with the same surname I had assumed they were siblings but actually they may have been other relations.......

So, the information I have is:
John Lowry - widower of Mary Eliza Gibson (Scotlands people)
William - son of John Lowry (from his marriage cert) but no reference to his birth in your references.  4 years older than Gibson - but visiting him in the 1881 Scottish census.
Gibson - son of John and Mary (from your references) and I have the place of birth as County Monaghan from his wife's poor relief records.
Margaret - daughter of John and Mary (from your references)
Harriet Adella - daughter of John and Elizabeth Gibson (from Scotlands people)

all children having been born in Ireland.

....strange then that William doesn't come up under Mary and John...........
