When does delete appear
« on: Sunday 07 December 08 02:42 UTC (UK) »

I realise mods can delete a post any time, but for we commoners (or convicts or colonials) when are we given the delete option.

I recently linked to a thread in a post, but discovered on checking that the post of interest has since been deleted, which makes my comment look somewhat illogical (which some may say is a normal event  Shocked but I do try to be logical, albeit sometimes weird)

It thus seems more reliable to always quote a post of interest (even from another thread) if there is a possibility of it being deleted.

A list of when/where a mortal can delete a post would be much appreciated.

Being a bit of a dummy myself, I would surmise the only way a topic can be deleted would be if the person who originated the topic asked a moderator to delete it; but it is annoying when you reply to a topic you have answered and look for it later and can't find it!

I replied to a topic some time ago and wasn't happy with the originators rather rude response (upon checking the persons previous posts I discovered that it seemed to be a common trait for this person) so I simply edited my post by clearing it and replacing with the word Deleted A mod must have nopticed it subsequently and deleted it completely

I've noticed that you can personally delete posts on the Totally Off Topic thread and maybe the Lighter Side but once you commit everywhere else I think it's up to the Mods to delete. In my humble observation.....I think each Mod has their own housekeeping thingy.....some delete and some archive...I may be wrong and I have been so many times before  Grin

I think that the 'Moved' posts disappear after a few days as well as part of the system.

I know you can delete your own posts from the TOT board (as per my opening post, the deleted item was from TOT, just the one post not the thread). I also know that TOT threads disappear over time, as do the moved threads,  but I have, at times seen the little delete symbol elsewhere. A word from someone who can list all the delete (as opposed to disappear) options would be appreciated. I used to think it was if I was the OP of a thread with no replies, but I have long ago proven that incorrect, when I tried to delete a double posting.

Hi Trish

You can delete when there's a delete button - if there isn't one ask a Mod.  That's not meant to sound flippant: not totally sure of when you can and can't, to be quite honest.

My point is, there should be very few instances of your needing to delete anything - we ask that you don't, because as you point out it can make a nonsense of other posts/ threads.

I can't explain the circumstances of the thread you quote but that was unfortunate and you might have asked for Moderator assistance in this case.

In summary - if in doubt, please ask - otherwise don't delete.

Kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Hi AR

It does sound rather flippant & weird that it cannot be defined when the delete button appears. I have no need to delete at all, I am happy with all my posts, but I get frustrated when I refer to a post & the postee then deletes it. I guess it shows the person up for the wimp that he/she is. I shall remember in the future to always quote the comment to which I refer, and avoid the issue of deleted posts.

Thank you for replying.

Trish

That's a bit harsh Trish. I have in the past deleted one of my posts after going back and re-reading it and thinking better of it.

I also deleted one after a rude response once. I wouldn't agree that that makes me a wimp.  Grin

I sometimes delete mine from various boards on the ToT, mainly because I get totally ignored anyway so I think what's the point  Roll Eyes but also when I have got bored of getting a topic that has gone way off topic anyway come up everytime I look at my Show new replies.  Sometimes on the ToT board they have completely nothing to do with the original question or comment.

I don't think that makes me a wimp!

I'm glad that's not just me  Grin Sometimes people carry on a "conversation" on TOT completely ignoring any other comments - so, yes, I've deleted comments for that reason as well.

I deleted a thread I started once because it was starting to get a bit over the top as some of the respondents were getting a bit rude to each other. I guess I'm a wimp  Undecided

To be fair to 'AR' (presumably Arranroots) she said she wasn't sure when Rootschatters could or could not delete a post.

Apart from the YTG thread, I didn't know deleting was a problem, and then on the YTG it is only a problem to non-contributors.

You're kidding, right?  Deletions happen all over the place, usually with no explanation.
