Im trying to establish a cause of death for my grandfather Joseph Hammond of Wallasey
as I have been told it might have been as the result of an air raid in nearby Seacombe
Would there be any local newspapers of the time online ?
Thanks in advance for any help

You need to get his death certificate from the GRO.

Do you know when he died? Then you or we can find the reference.
I would suggest looking at local papers after you have got the cert.

Hi Pancho
There is a death registered in Mar q of 1942 in Wallasey for a Joseph Hammond
aged 69 ref 8a 1101.
According to Wikipaedia the last bombing raid on Merseyside took place on 10 Jan
1942 which fits with a Mar q death cert but it doesn't specifically mention Wallasey.

dying during this time.

I didn't wait for reply,I like looking through the papers ,so i looked through the 1942.I didn't find any mention of Joseph. That isn't surprising really because the aria had been badly hit and hundreds of people died. The papers printed during the war years are full of reports of R.N & army missing or died in the middle east.Some have photos.I will wait till you get you death cert and you find out the reason for his death.

I have now received my Grandad Joseph Hammond`s Death Certificate and it says he died of Asphyxia due to drowning
in the River Mersey on the 18th March 1942 but theres no evidence as to how he got in the water
His Address is given as 12 Rankin st Wallasey but my mums address at that time was Stonehouse Road
Wallasey so dont know where Rankin st comes into it .
Still want to know if any newspapers reported on his death at the time I know Celia didnt find anything when she looked but would appreciate someone looking again .Thanks all for your help

Who was the informant on the death certificate? You can sometimes pick up clues from them.
