yes, accidental death would have been handled by the Coroner - might be lucky and find an inquest report .... typically the paperwork isnt archived, but again a newspaper report might be found ?

It's worth checking with the local Record Office to see if the Inquest papers are available;  perhaps another newspaper covered the Inquest.  Again the local Record Office should be able to advise you.

Good luck!

The local Record Office for Cheshire should be able to help.

www.cheshire.gov.uk/recoff/   will have a "contact us" showing their email address.

I wasn't actually looking for an inquest at the time ;)just a death so if the inquest was on the 19th it might be reported a couple of weeks later.Because the paper is weekly.I will have another look 4 you.

She still hasn't Wink,he hasn't been added to the 1942 newspaper since I  looked last year Grin  Today I have looked at the same paper as before March 21st,March 28th, April 4th & April 11th.I don't think a report would be any later than that.
In all 4 editions there was only one report, of praise for the ferrymen who rescued a James Henry Gibbs who was found floating in the Mersey, he was alive when found but died the next day.

Asphyxia due to drowning
why do you think it was a suspicious death he could have fallen in.I am not sure if there  would be a coroners report  printed if that was the case.Because it was accidental, on the other hand if he was drunk when he hit the water then the death cert might mention something different Undecided I suggest you try one of the suggestions above. Its not much use me suggesting you try the birkenhead archives because they only have the same paper plus the birkenhead ones of course.

Who holds the coroners records then Celia?  Do they belong to the courts or could they be at Birkenhead archives? Personally I would email them and ask if they have them or at least can they tell you where they can be viewed if that is possible?

http://www.wirral.gov.uk/ContactUs/ContactUs.html

Did the Wallasey News only publish once a week?  I thought it was twice but maybe that was only the Birkenhead News?

Incidentally, there is a full list of civilian bombing victims in that book "Wallasey at War".  Same goes in the Birkenhead at war one.

Who knows what happened to the poor guy?  Might have fallen in the dock due to the blackout and got into the river when the dock gate opened?  Rankin street is more or less right on the docks.  Stonehouse Road is in Wallasey village I think?

I would love to know the outcome of this.

Slight edit, I am not sure if there isn't a better contact page but if you phone the main switchboard they will put you in the right direction I am sure.
