Hi - I would like to find more about my great, great, great, grandmother Ann Stapleton and her daughter Mary Stapleton.
All that I have at present is taken from the English census of 1851 and 1861 -
1851 - Macclesfield, Cheshire. Ann Stapleton age 56 - Washerwoman - Born on the sea. Mary Stapleton age 15 - Cotton Piecer - Born Ireland.
1861 - Macclesfield, Cheshire. Ann Stapleton age 63 - Laundress - Born Sea. Mary Stapleton age 23 - Silk Winder - Born Banagher Kings County, Ireland.
Mary has a sister who is about 4 years older called Elizabeth.
The three women may have crossed over from Ireland during the 1840's because I cannot locate them in the 1841 census for England. They may have travelled in the company of Elizabeth Garrison and her three daughters Ann, Ellen and Rosa who they are living with in 1851.
I have no knowledge at all about researching Irsih family history and any advice whatsoever will be gratefullly received.
Kind regards Carl

there's about 24 Stapleton households on Griffith valuation (1847 to 1864) - this is a land valuation created for local taxation and is useful as no complete Irish Census information survives for any years before 1901 & 1911.
http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_form.php
As you probably know the Irish Famine occurred in the mid 1840s so many people emmigrated at this time.
Civil records in general begin in 1864, and recording of non-Catholic marriages started in 1845.
to get any further you will probably need Parish Records.. do you know if the Stapleton family were Catholic or Church of Ireland ?

Hi Shane -
Many thanks for the speedy reply. At a guess I would think that they were Catholic because Mary married a Catholic husband in Salford Lancashire.
Am I correct in thinking that for church records you would be refering to the IGI, or are there other means in Ireland?
With regards to the search form that you sent to me, is this search available to anyone or is this a subscription service? If I visited Ireland do you know if the parish records are likely to be easy to access?
Regards Carl

that Griffith website is free..
Catholic Parish records are available on Microfilm in the National Library, the dates covered vary greatly from parish to parish. Some counties are available on the Irish Family History Foundation website (www.irish-roots.ie), which is subscription based but at present Co. Offaly is not included.
there's a list of the films available at the National Library at http://www.nli.ie/en/parish-register.aspx
