Hi Guys .....
Hmm ...... so it is Houghton Regis .
Heywood Plaiter is right..... straw plaiting...as soon as they could grip the straw they would teach the children in small schools in the village. Dealers would then sell the straw to the hatters in Luton...not far away.
I was hoping this would lead to my Ann Folks/Fooks as I saw a marriage that was possible for her to a Joseph but I may have the wrong one .
Back to the records office maybe.

Hi Tazzie
theres an Ann Fooks on the 1861 but she is married to a John, but I carnt see her on the 1871
There is a death for a John Foaks born 1831 died 1866, aged 35 Leighton Buzzard, Beds/Bucks Vol 3b page 243
On the 1861 they were living at Wing, which came under the Leighton Buzzard district, so the marriage you found is a possible

Hi Ricky....
So could be looking at a widow. The one I wanted it would be her first marriage .
Ok have to check PR's for her with my other listing .
Cheers

Tazzie
Have been following your request for Dimmock and Fookes family, have a sneaky feeling that we may have a common interest here, these names pop up in my tree. The main family name I'm researching is Varney of Mentmore and Wing.

Hi Carol...
My main lot are Fooks/Foocks/Folkes/Foulkes all spellings from Stewkley. They are in Stewkley for all census. I was looking to find out what happened to Ann Foulkes daughter of William & Susannah(nee Emerson). A marriage came up to Joseph Dimmock but that has now proved not to be the one as her father was listed on the marriage and it wasn't William Foulkes so not my Ann. She is Ann King who married John Fooks in Luton in 1851. For a time William's son worked for Matthew Bliss in Mentmore and his wife's family moved there from Aldbury Herts. Hows/Hews family. I keep coming back to this little lot as the name changes are terrible and Stewkley PR's are now horrible to read once you get past 1800. They also appear in Newton Longville/ Fenny Stratford /Bow Brickhill. If you put Thomas Foulkes into the IGI on LDS you get what I think is the longest extracted spelling of a name I have ever seen!
So still sorting them out. I was hoping to get to library today but had to go see someone instead so let me know if any info may help.

Hi Tazzie
You have in recent times helped me with look-ups for Varney, thank you. I have a Sarah Dimmock of Leighton Buzzard having a child by John Varney in the 1820's have the Bastardy Bonds but don't know what happened to the child. Also have Ann Fookes marrying into the Varney family 1896 in Mentmore. Obviously? no connection here, good luck with your research.
