Hi Doric,
This might help with your question regarding the location of Craig, Ferryden. The info is from the Scotland Genuki site:
Craig
"A parish situated in the County of Angus, at the discharge of the Southesk into the ocean. It extends along the sea coast about 4 miles, presenting a rocky craig or precipice to the sea; its length is about 6, and its breadth about 2 and a half miles. The surface is elevated about 400 feet above the level if the sea, but is upon the whole flat. The soil is good, producing excellent crops. There are two fishing villages in the parish viz Usan and Ferryden. There is an island in the mouth of the Southesk, called Inchbraick, attached to this parish, through which the new road passes from Arbroath to the bridge of Montrose." Hi
I live fairly close to the area known as Craig. Although there are 2 villages, the largest being ferryden which flourished in response to the herring fishing industry, there are also farms, old coastguard cottages, at least one large estate with castle, large manor houses and, in the past, a school, a few churches and a mixture of small cottage type industries. Hence there may have been ample scope for building work.
I hope this may help your understanding of the area.

Many thanks Scotmaid for taking the interest in my query re Craig, Ferryden. It is very much appreciated.
Because I have very little information on William Johnson my gt.grandfather, other than that he was born in Worksop, Nottinghamshire and ended up in Craig, Ferryden by 1881 with his family and where my grandmother was born, I haven't been able to make much progress. With Johnson(ton) being such a common name in Scotland and the very fact that he doesn't appear on the 1881 Census with his family, it's rather like looking for a needle in a haystack. However, you have rekindled my interest, so thank you for that, I will certainly have another go and see if I can come up with anything, it certainly sounds a lovely interesting place.

The 1891 census lists a William Johnson (could be local registrar spelling of the name) with wife (Margaret, 4 children and a niece) as living at 12 Wharf Street , Montrose.
His occupation is listed as "waterman" and both he and his wife are said to have been born in "England".
This street is the street facing the river which separates Montrose and Ferryden. I'm sure the job of waterman would be an essential one of the time.
If this is your family link they have only moved a mile or so (not good with measuring distance!) from Craig, depending on their location in that area.

Thankyou Brunning for your information which I have added to my file.
Unfortunately I have been able to make very little progress with my Johnson family because I just cannot locate my gt.grandfather William on the 1881 Census. Previous Census returns show him born in Worksop, Nottinghamshire and as I have mentioned my gran was born in 1881 at Craig, Ferryden and is shown on the Census as 1 month old with mother Caroline and rest of siblings, but no William. He must have been around somewhere as Caroline is described as Railway Labourers Wife. However, by 1891, the family are back in England living at Sunderland and Caroline's status then is shown as Widow, so it begs the question did William die in Scotland and Caroline came back to England with the children, or did he die in Sunderland. With nothing else to go on and with a name like Johnson, I am finding it virtually impossible to move forward, but my gut instinct tells me that William may well have died in Scotland as I recall my gran often saying she was born in Scotland but could not relate to anything about her childhood there, so it is a guess that the family came back to England shortly after 1881. Again impossible to track down a death certificate in England and to be certain of the correct one, as there are so many William Johnsons. It's like looking for a needle in a haystack !!!

I have been looking at the 1881 census entry for your ggran Caroline and family; it is interesting to note that your gran's sister caroline, aged 3 on the census, was born in Ferr-Port-on-Craig, which according to my 1882 Gazetteer of Scotland is:
"A town and parish in extreme north-east of Fife. The town stands on Firth of Tay, opposite Broughty Ferry; sprang from an abcient ferry; took the alternative name of Tayport at formation of the edinburgh, Perth and Dundee railway; acquired then extensive harbour works and station buildings for the railway's communication with Broughty Ferry; became afterwards a sea-bathing resort....."
With your ggran being recorded in 1881 census as a railway labourer's wife, this would make some sense. The Montrose railway had to have 2 bridges made to cross the river from Craig/Ferryport to Rossie island, then from the island to Montrose, so it is very possible that your ggrandad was there to help build the bridges and lay the railway northwards to Aberdeen. I'm afraid that I don't know when the Dundee/Aberdeen railway was constructed, but the mid to late 1800's saw many railways being made.
Brick walls like you have hit with this line are all too common, I have 3 or 4 erected at the moment! but hey, lots of them come down from the most unexpected bits of information, so don't give up.

Thankyou Brunning and Jim for your help and advice, it is beginning to make a little bit of sense to me, as on my gran's marriage certificate of 1901, the occupation of William, her father (deceased) was given as a Railway Contractor, so with a little bit more effort by following your advice, perhaps that brick wall might not be so high as I had thought. Thankyou both very much, it is most appreciated.

PS. Perhaps you might be able to tell me that if g.grandad William was involved with these works, would it have been near enough for him to get to his work or would he have had to board somewhere other than home. Many thanks.
