Paul PONTING in 1841 or 1851
« on: Friday 12 December 08 11:03 UTC (UK) »

Could someone please help me to identify Paul PONTING in the 1841 and 1851 Censuses?  I think he originally came from Somerset, although he doesn't appear there as far as I can tell.

The National Archives shows the following will proved on 28 August 1851:
Will of Paul Ponting, Gentleman of No 1 Cambridge Street Edgware Road , Middlesex

It looks as if he may be indexed in the 1851 Census as Paul POUTING with a year of birth of 1796.

I can't see him in 1841, although one of the indexes suggests that he may appear in St James Westminster as Paul PANTON born 1796 .

Can anyone help please?

Many thanks

This is excellent, many thanks.

Until now I didn't know that he had married, much less had a any children. But now that you have found him, I can see a baptism in Leicester for the daughter Louisa.

I really appreciate this; it's definitely the person I was hoping it would be.

Kind regards

Louisa was an only child. She married William Holbrook, at St George's Hanover Square, on January 12th 1856. William was the second son of Joseph Holbrook of Charlton, Somerset. ( Trewman's Exeter Flying Post or Plymouth and Cornish Advertiser Thursday January 17 1856)

Many thanks Shaun.

This is a real find; but the marriage makes sense as the HOLBROOKs come from very much the same part of Somerset as the PONTINGs did originally.

Indeed, the relationship is more than geographic: Joseph HOLBROOK married Sarah PONTING in 1820 (the mother of William) and following her death in 1827, he turned around and married her sister Maria the following year! So there was a strong family link between Louisa PONTING and her husband William HOLBROOK.

Thanks a lot for this additional detail.

Kind regards

I haven't found him in the 1841 census yet but he's in the Post Office London Directory for that year at 52 Cambridge Street. http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp

Thanks  lot Shaun

I am very pleased to have found him after he disappeared from Somerset, and your help in sorting out his daughter's marriage was also very much appreciated.

Kind regards
