Edward Staunton: COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 10 December 08 21:56 UTC (UK) »

Hi

My great grandfather was Edward Patrick Staunton, born about 1847.  I would be grateful for help in finding out when he died.

His marriage certificate gives his occupation as an apothecary living in Dominick Street, Galway.  He married Jane Semple on 6 June 1876.  My grandfather, Edward Bertram Staunton, was born the following year and his sister Mary about 1881.  There may have been other children but I don’t have any information about them.  By the 1901 census Jane had re-married (new husband a Dr Parker), so Edward could have died at any time sometime between 1881 and 1901.

I would appreciate any information which would help with the date of my great grandfather’s death or any that would narrow it down (e.g. the date Jane Staunton married Dr Parker).

Many thanks if you can help

Malcolm

found some details that may be of interest in Slaters Directores :

1846 :  Apothecaries Section - Staunton Patrick, Dominick St.

1870 : Apothecaries Section - Staunton Edwd. Patrick, Dominick St.

1881 : Apothecaries Section - Staunton Jane, Dominick St.

1894 : Alphabetic Section - Parker Dr.Francis,8 LowerDominick st

in connection with my work I knew Staunton Chemists over in the west - one of them was in Castlebar... not sure if they are connectioned, but it is a profession that runs in families. My grandad was a Pharmacist/Chemist in Dublin.

Hi Shane

That's brilliant!  It certainly narrows down the date my great grandfather died then - it looks as though it was before 1881.  Hopefully I can get hold of the certificate now and find out more.

Jane Parker and my grandfather Edward Bertram were living at the medical hall at 8 Lower Dominick Street in the 1901 census and my grandfather eventually took it over.  I don't know of a connection to Castlebar but will keep an eye open.  I understand my grandfather and his family moved from Galway to run a chemists in Ballinrobe around 1910 and then in Ballaghaderreen in the early 1920s.

Many thanks for your help with this.
