Interesting entry on the 1841. It might not be the correct one but ....

King Street, Castle Douglas, Kelton
Parish - 869 ED 2a Page 8

John Black, 64, ag lab
Catherine, 60
Margaret, 25
Catherine, 20
Margaret, 7

All b. Kirkcudbrightshire

Note that in  the 1841, the ages were rounded down into 5 year age bands for those over 15. Thus 15= 15-19; 20= 20-24; 25= 25-29; etc.

She tells me she has seen that Francis was present at his grandfather's death & that he was called James & I think this is where she thought the James in 51 was his grandfather.

Hi Tracey

Where and when did James senior die?  I'm sure I looked for him on Scotland's People  Undecided

Hi Gadget,
I spoke to my daughter & she's since been looking for her records of James Black without luck but is still searching.  She found the information about James' death on Scotland's People a good while ago & the date for his death was 26/05/1860 at Castle Douglas & Francis, grandson, was present at death.  The place of birth for James was stated as, County Monaghan, Ireland abt. 1786.
My daughter had found a marriage for a James Black to a Catherine Cozbie in 1842 in Port William, maybe possibles for Francis' parents, just going on the possibility that Catherine was his mother.
Thank you again for your interest & help on this.  I'll get back to you if I find anything concrete or possible.
Kind regards,
Tracey.

I'll have a closer look at the 1851 census to see the relationship again.

So far,  I've not found a likely Black(using soundex) or B*k (using wildcards) dying in Castle Douglas or elswhere in Kirkcudbrightshire in 1859-61 on Scotlands People.

The 1851 has Catherine down as definitely James daughter. James is listed as a widower and Catherine as a widow so  this Catherine might well have married James's son (a James) in 1842). This would make Catherine the daughter in law and Francis the grandson of the elder James.

James Black  married Catherine Cozbie in the parish of Mochrum, Wigtownshire in 1842. He is described as 'a visitor at Port William'

Thanks again Gadget.  My geography is atrocious so would you know how far from Kirkudbrightshire is from Port William.  Maybe Catherine was from Port William.  I'm looking forward to maybe getting some certs in the new year to verify some things & get definites but I appreciate your help in this.
It makes more sense that Catherine is the dughter in law I would think as there's a good age difference I believe.
Kind regards,Tracey.

Me Again!
I remembered my daughter had a Elizabeth Thomson as a possible wife to James.  Elizabeth Thomson b. abt 1791 Ireland.  I haven't yet found this but will look a little more into this now I've remembered.
Kind regards,
Tracey.

Today, I'd say that the two places are approx. 1/2 - 3/4 hour by car (depending on traffic!).

Here's a map of the parishes of Wigtownshire and Kirkcudbrightshire:

http://scotlandsfamily.com/parish-map-wigtown.htm

Note that Kelton, where Castle Douglas is located,  is not all that far from Mochrum, where they married.

I note that Catherine is down as b. Kelton in the 1851.

At the moment, I'm having probs finding Catherine (variations) on the 1841.

I'm afraid that Christmas is going to intervene on this one now   Sad

Hi Tracey

If you could get sight of the death cert that your daughter has, this would give James, snr's wife's details.

Thanks for that parish information Gadget & I understand Christmas will get in the way but thank you for all your help so far.  I will let you know when I see the death cert.  My daughter has her hands full at the minute but I'll certainly let you know any details I might get.
Wishing you a merry Christmas, good health, prosperity & good friends for 2009.
Kind regards,Tracey.
