St. James Blackett St. Church, Newcastle?? COMPLETED WITH THANKS
« on: Thursday 11 December 08 00:43 UTC (UK) »

Hello Rootschatters, I have found a collateral line ancestor who was baptized in 1788 in Newcastle at "St. James Blackett St. formerly Silver St. Independent Church".... Huh  My initial thought is that this may have been a presbyterian church....however, can anyone point me in the proper direction?  Since I cannot find the parents marrying in Newcastle, I am thinking it's time to head North across the border to find the origins of this family (Proctor). Can anyone give me additional insights into this church?  Thank you kindly and I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy Christmas.   Grin  Pat

Hello Pat,

You may be right about the Scottish connection - see this page about St. James, the oldest Free Church in Newcastle:

Kind regards,

Thanks very much, Pat, all the very best to you, too  Smiley

Marriages at St. James not covered by the IGI (I don't think) but they may have married at one of the other independent Churches in Newcastle, IGI coverage listed here:

Hello again, Barbara, Just an update....I found a total of 8 children for this couple baptized at the Blackett St. Church. One of the children had a clue - a middle name of "Donkin" (Duncan!)... Sure enough, the IGI shows a John Proctor and a Barbara Duncan married 1766 at St. Nicholas in Aberdeen.  Smiley  This is a little more than a year before they had their first baptized at Blackett St Church! Of course, I still have to do additional verification to totally support this theory....wouldn't it be nice if ALL of our ancestors left those clues with the Mother's maiden name?   Grin  Thanks again! Hi Pat,

That's good news, yes, middle names are a great help!  Good luck with the rest of your research

have just found this site, though I have been researching my family history for over twenty five years!! You must be distant kin as my ancestors were John Proctor & Barbara Duncan & I discovered the record of their marriage in Aberdeen just as we moved house from Scotland back to England which was quite frustrating as we had lived within half an hour of the record offices in Edinburgh and of course this was in the days pre internet research!!I have managed to get back a few more generations than this. and would be happy to share information.
regards

Hello Kath and a very warm welcome to Rootschat!!!  Grin  The descent I am working with goes through James and Barbara's son, Samuel Proctor...I have LOTS of information to share with you as well as several interesting family stories.  In addition, I will put you in touch with another cousin who is more closely related to you than I am!   You won't be able to send a personal message (PM) until you make 3 postings, I believe.  I will be sending you a PM with the other cousin's e-mail.....Again, a warm welcome, cousin!!!  Most sincerely, Pat
