BAKER family, Longlawford?
« on: Saturday 13 December 08 13:45 UTC (UK) »

My grandfather's name was Thomas Baker, on the 1901 census form for Thornton Heath, Surrey, he is listed as being born in Worcestershire, Longlawford, is there such a place? Google maps didn't recognise it. do you think perhaps the census taker misspelt it.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Bill,

The only Long Lawford I know of is near Rugby in Warwickshire - have you found him in any other census to check that they may have mixed up Warwickshire/Worcestershire?

Thanks Ricky  Smiley

However I can't seem to find him with that birthplace in the earlier census.

Bill, do you have his marriage cert giving father's name and occupation?

Thanks Barbara and Ricky for your quick replies, however I can get no further back than 1901 when he was a fishmonger/ greengrocer, I seem to have the impression that the family originated in Sussex but Sussex is awash with Tom Bakers, even the few remaining members of the family have no information, not even knowing that my grandfather came from 'up north'.
There is a rumour in the family that he had changed his name from Maddocks for some unknown reason so it's even more confusing.

Well having the marriage certificate would be really helpful, to know his father's name and occupation would help place him in an earlier census.
Do you have a child's birth cert showing his wife's maiden name
(or do you already have this information?

I wonder if the Benjamin with them in 1901 is his brother?

His wife, (my grandmother's) maiden name was Annie Brand born in Sth, Norwood, I too thought Benjamin could be a brother but he was born in Hanwell, Middlesex. I understand there was in fact a brother named Jack Baker in the same area as my grandfather and in the same line of business which makes me wonder if he really did change his name.

Hi Bill,

So you haven't found a marriage for them?

I can't see one, the only Annie Brand marriage to a Thomas I can see is this one
Jun 1900  Epping  4a 671   BRAND  Ann Harknett   to     DURHAM    Thomas

Just received PM to say 'Baker Edwin Walter married Annie Maria Brand September 1899  Croydon 2A   641.' I did have an uncle Ted and an Uncle Walter so it all seems to fit, he obviously named two of his sons after his own names perhaps that was just the only name change (to Thomas) that has been the family mystery. Undecided

Oh right, so does your pm-er know the rest of the story too,  or do you want me to have a look for him in the earlier census under that name?

Well I think this may be Edwin W with a brother Benjamin! But you'll need the marriage cert to be sure of his father, and if you have your parent's birth cert to see which name is given on that for Edwin/Thomas ??  The birthplaces are a bit different too, Warwickshire is for Benjamin and Middlesex for Edwin!

1891  RG12/596 Folio 131 Page 20
4 Gillett Road, Croydon,Surrey
BAKER
John M    head 41 Fire Wood Manufacturer  Hornsey London
Fanny M  wife  39                       Islington London
Edwin W  son  15                       Stanwell Middx
John Thomas son 11                   New Cross Surrey
Benjamin     son  10                    Newbold on Avon Warwicks
Fanny M    dau     6                    Halford Waltham Cross
Louisa          "      2                     Croydon Surrey

and I can't see them in 1881, can you?

Hi Barbara, I think you have found the family, It's less than a mile from the greengrocers shop in Moffatt Rd. which was bombed and destroyed in the war. I have been looking for the family in Worcestershire on 1881/1891 census forms that's why I've had no luck.
It's possible that the name change was only from Edwin to Thomas.
I did have an uncle Ted (Edwin) and an uncle Wally (Walter) so grandad obviously named two of his sons after himself.

Think that's confirmed it, as Long Lawford edit: Newbold on Avon in Warwickshire is only 2 miles from Long Lawford, so someone's been a bit confused and swapped birthplaces around in the census, as they have with the Middlesex one for Benjamin.  They seem to have moved around a lot!

Will have another look for them in 1881 and earlier now.

Thanks for helping me Barbara, not sure what you mean when you say Long Lawford in Warwickshire is only 2 miles from Long Lawford. Undecided
