Convict - Thomas Stephens
« on: Sunday 14 December 08 13:41 UTC (UK) »

Hello All,
Can anybody tell me how I can find out what area of Cavan County this convict came from. He was born in 1786, and in 1817 he was sentenced to 14 years in NSW, Australia. He came to Australia aboard the "Pilot". I am trying to ascertain whether this convict is the father of my 4th GG, however the limited info I have states Cavan County.

Also a copy of my 4th GG baptism record from the Church of Ireland in Kildrumferton in 1814, indicates there were 3 sponsors (not witnesses) in attendance. Can anybody please advise what the term sponsor means on a record of baptism.

Thanks

Hello

His convict details from the Tasmanian Government:
http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?detail=1&type=C&id=67419

This appears to be his page in the scanned Conduct Record Book under Stevens, Thos.
http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/ImageViewer/image_viewer.htm?CON31-1-38,370,24,L,80

Looks like you might try also Stevens in searching for him in Ireland.

Linda,

Thanks for your email. I had already obtained the conduct records etc from the Tassie web-site. All of the information I have obtained to date states nothing more than that he was from County Cavan. I believe that he was living in the parish of Kildrumferton (Crosserlough) at the time of his arrest.
There is no birth records for Thomas Stephens/Stevens born 1786 in Cavan County, nor have I been able to locate any record of marriage to Margaret Scott in approx 1802-1804. It could be possible that they emigrated from Scotland or England, but I have not been able to locate anything to date to confirm this. Again thanks for your email.
