1871 census look- up Southwell for Bruell
« on: Monday 07 February 05 13:25 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for a Martha Bruell who was born around 1871 - 3 (depending which later census you believe) in Southwell Notts, and I was wondering what (if any ) Bruell (there are assorted ways of spelling this name) families were there in 1871

Thanks in advance

Hi Richard (what an unusual surname you have)

Thank you very much for that - I think they are probably the right ones (I have sent for Martha's wedding certificate to be sure), it is an uncommon name in Nottinghamshire at that time.  Did the records you use show William the fathers occupation? - or was it an index

Thanks again

Hi,

It looks like Brick Maker. His wife was a lacemender. All the children, down to the 2 year old were scholars.

They were living at 12, Rose Yard.

The actual image looks more like Brewill, rather than how it has been indexed - Brewell.

regards, Richard

I can't find them at all in 1881 under any spelling  - strange perhaps they got missed

In the 1881 surname atlas for the 1881 census there are only 13 Bruell's.

2 in County Durham

2 in North Riding, Yorkshire

2 in Nottinghamshire

and 7 in Derbyshire

Maybe you could search these areas assuming the name hasn't be mis-transcribed  Huh

Thanks for the advice Steve - but I have tried that - have even tried putting in some of the first names, approx years of birth and a b*(wildcard) as surname then going through the results for Southwell as a place of birth - nothing - thats why I think they may have been missed
