Oooh, I'm struggling to remember. Manukau Rd runs (used to run?) right through to Parnell so both those would be right for Maria.
E W Brothers in College Rd is the gr-gr-grandfather chasing the gold without success in Thames in 1875.

* Is the Samuel you're looking for - "Samuel Royden DOWDALL" ? (He married Miriam Mary FLEMING in 1894) :

Hi Lu yes he was my great grandfather, he called himself Samuel but i think his full name Royden Samuel, his son Royden Jubal Samuel. steve

Perhaps the best plan is to purchase the marriage record of 1894 for Samuel DOWDALL and Miriam FLEMING - (order the "printout", which gives maximum info). This will confirm who Samuel's parents were and also his place of birth.
