1851 lookup please, Much Birch and Much Cowarne areas
« on: Monday 07 February 05 13:49 GMT (UK) »

I wonder if anyone can look for the following people for me on the 1851 census.

Charles Morgan age 22 b Much Cowarne
Susan/ Susannah Morgan wife age 24 b Much Birch

Believe they will be in Much Birch, but if not I know they did move to Hereford itself, Berrington st and West st

Also, Is it possible to look for the following;

Mary Taylor
Benjamin Thomas
Daniel West

They are witness' at my ancestors marriage (Charles Morgan and Susan Whitney Greenly) which was held in Much Birch in 1848 and as I cannot find a birth for my Charles Morgan at Much Cowarne, I hoped the witnesses or their families may give some clues.

As the names are not uncommon, I think matches for Much Birch and Much Cowarne (where groom was from) will be the only ones of use.  I am having to presume the witnesses were local to the couple.

I would really appreciate any help with this. Huh

Kim,
Thankyou so much. You are helping me knock down a brickwall, as there is a James Morgan listed with Charles, who must be his brother. That is fantastic news.
Also, the witness' info is brilliant. They are older than I was expecting them to be. Perhaps they are friends of Susan/nah's family.
Thanks so much for the lookup, I'm off to ring my mom and tell her!!!! Grin Grin Grin

Kim, just thought, does it tell you where James Morgan was born?

Sorry to tell you James is next door, so may not be a brother. The edges of my image are cropped, too, so I can't even tell if same street address. BTW the census place is part of (or adjacent to) Hereford city.

? Friars Street
Charles MORGAN / Head / Mar / 23 / Farm Laborer / Hereford Cowarne
Susan MORGAN / Wife / Mar / 24 / / Hereford Cowarne
Joseph MORGAN / Son / / 14 m / / Hereford Much Birch

Next door:

3 Friars Street
George WARD / Head / Mar / 47 / China Mender / Berks Thatcham
Catherine WARD / Wife / Mar / 46 / / Ireland Waterford
James MORGAN / Son / U / 17 / / Hereford

That little lot probably raises more questions than it answers. Perhaps Catherine was previously married to a MORGAN?

Also, when this enumerator just gives a birthplace as "Hereford", he appears to mean the city.

I'll have a look for the other images later - off to the library for now!

Cheers

Here are the others from 1851.

The other WESTs on this page are in household of John WEST, farmer of 150 acres, born King's Caple, so unlikely to be a close relation.

Much Birch / Old Huh [looks something like Old Riblic]
Daniel WEST / Head / Mar / 62 / Farm Laborer / Hereford Much Birch
Mary WEST / Wife / Mar / 57 / / Monmouth Dixton
Mary WEST / Daur / U / 36 / Dressmaker / Monmouth Dixton
Harriot WEST / Daur / U / 17 / Dressmaker / Hereford Much Birch
Emma WEST / Grand Daur / / 8 / / Hereford Much Birch
Sophia WILKINSON / Visitor / / 7 / Innkeepers Daughter / Hereford Bromyard

Much Birch / Tilcot House
Benjamin THOMAS / Head / Mar / 41 / Ag Laborer / Gloucester Newent [?]
Maria THOMAS / Wife / Mar / 40 / / Hereford Much Birch
James THOMAS / Son / U / 13 / Ag Lab / Hereford Much Birch
Eliza THOMAS / Daur / / 11 / / Hereford Much Birch
Charles THOMAS / Son / / 9 / / Hereford Much Birch
Moses THOMAS / Son / / 3 Mon / / Hereford Much Birch

I also had a look at the 1841.

This is closest I could find for Charles MORGAN in Much Cowarne; even if it is him, it doesn't give much info:

HO107/418 Much Cowarne

fo 7 pg 8 / Bridgend
Richard MEREDITH / 36 / Farmer / Y
Eliza MEREDITH / 33 / / Y
Jane MEREDITH / 9 / / Y
Richard MEREDITH / 2 / / Y
John MEREDITH / 1 / / Y
Ann SKINNER / 14 / Ag Lab / Y
James WILLIAMS / 20 / Ag Lab / Y
Charles MORGAN / 15 / Ag Lab / Y
Thomas GEORGE / 12 / Ag Lab / Y

I also could not see any GREENLY in Much Birch. I think I found the possible witnesses - the WEST ages are all over the place, and the occupation different, but does look like the same ones as from 1851.

HO107/432 Much Birch

fo 3 / pg 1 / Quarry Cottage
Daniel WEST / 47 / Relieving Officer / Y
Mary WEST / 42 / / N
Mary WEST / 20 / / N
Ann WEST / 15 / / Y
William WEST / 10 / / Y
Harriott WEST / 7 / / Y
Eliza WEST / 4 / / Y

fo 4 / pg 3 / Thatch'd Cottage
Benjamin THOMAS / 30 / Ag Lab / N
Maria THOMAS / 30 / / Y
Matthew THOMAS / 10 / / Y
Peter THOMAS / 7 / / Y
Henry THOMAS / 5 / / Y
James THOMAS / 3 / / Y
Eliza THOMAS / 1 / / Y

Cheers

Steve, all that info is fantastic, but you're right about  the morgan info throwing up more problems. There is a slim possibility that perhaps catherine could be his mum and remarried someone called ward, but that really is conjecture - still something very much worth checking out.

You probably couldn't find Greenly in 1841 as then they just seemed to be called Whitney, and it's only Susan's marriage certificate that they called thenselves Whitney Greenly ( made themselves look a bit more interesting, i think it's mother's maiden name.)

Typical that Charles isn't with his family in 1841 (awkward person he is, giving his birth as Much Cowarne and then not appearing on their records!!) but it is good to know who he was with and that he was possiblly older, providing it is him.
It's great to have all the info about the witness' as I can really check them out and see where the link is.
Thanks once again for all this lovely information
