"Matoaka"
« on: Monday 15 December 08 11:00 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone help me with info about Thomas Anderson, who was an immigrant to Australia on the "Matoaka" in 1857. Is there some way I can access his immigration record? I have found his name listed on the passenger list, but that is all I have found (other than his age - 22 years).  Smiley Thanks, Maxene

I have found the ship arriving in NSW but there are the passengers names are not listed...just

145    FEMALE              PASSENGERS
192    MALE              PASSENGERS
 91    CHILDREN          PASSENGERS

http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/1857/01/062mat.htm

Perhaps there was more than one trip seeing this one was in Jan.

Hi, Cando - He arrived in N.S.W. - Sydney. I am hoping his parents or place of origin are listed somewhere. Thanks, again. Maxene

Cando, I just went into the shipping list site and typed the ship's name. Also, I went into records.nsw.gov.au and typed in his name. I'm not very good at research - I just try things and hope something comes of it. Maxene

Oh Maxene you have no idea how many times I find a bit of info and then have endless trouble finding it the 2nd time...lots of s******g at times.  Will have another look to see if I can find your record...as you may be able to order/purchase  a copy of the entry online.

Here is the link to your record....you can order if you wish...costs $25.

Maxine,

He is also my relative on my father's side. I have details on him and his decendants if you would like them.

Hi Shaz, Kris and Cass - Thank you for the info on Thomas Anderson. Based on the info provided by Kris, I am sad to say that he was not my ancestor. Oh well, back to the drawing board. Thank you for all of your help.  Smiley Maxene

Maxene

start with birth, death and  marriage certs then work out ages of the parents and the state or country that is listed on the certs then keep going back. there will be mistakes but its great fun to find more info on a relative.

Thanks Shaz.  That is basically what I am doing - and when I find out that someone is NOT my ancestor, at least that reduces the odds of who is. Irish records are particularly difficult to unearth in some localities but I shalll soldier on. Thanks for your help and advice. Maxene
