« on: Sunday 14 December 08 00:56 UTC (UK) »

Could someone tell me please if the 'gh' in Dunshaughlin is pronounced as an 'f', a 'gh' or is it silent?

Thanks
Linda

a bit like 'Done shauch lin'

the town's name in Irish is 'Dún Seachlainn'

Thank y'all so much for replying.  What I'm trying to locate is a village/townland/crossroad/name of a farm that appears on the 1881 census for Leeds as Dunchoplin Ireland.  I can't find it on any resource to do with place names in Ireland so I wondered if it was a mispelling or phonetic spelling.  Dunshaughlin is the closest I've found so far.

See www.seanruad.com to find details of townlands and parishes in Ireland. Be sure to change default setting from exact match to search for part of a word.

Aghadowey - Thanks for sending the seanruad.com link.  It's a great website.  I looked at everything beginning with Dun or Don and didn't find Dunchoplin.  Dunshaughlin is still the closest to it.  Knowing now how to pronounce it, I can see what I assume was an English enumerator spelling it the way it may have sounded to him.
