Family recorded here are:-
Samuel Gent age 36 Cotton glove maker Ruth age 45 seamtress Mary 14 seamtress William age 10 George 4 John ? 21 son in law (actually stepson) school teacher
Could someone with 1861 Notts census please check this for me and give an opinion on John's surname?
I would be most grateful - my eyes are spinning
Many, many thanks in advance, Tricia

Hi Trisha, I've had a look and this is what i think it looks like EULVELEY. The index for the 1861 has it down as ENVELEY.
Neither of these names are in the 1881 surname atlas.
I'll check my other indexes later this evening.
Steve.

Steve,
Before you do that this name was given to me before I had personal access to 1861 as Everly(Everley) and I was also given information that George Gent married Ruth Everly in Bulwell 25/12 1844 by the same person.
On looking at the image it looks longer than Everly but we all know what happens on the census. Could you possibly confirm in anyway that this is,indeed, Everly. I haven't managed to find Ruth Everly's birth - but she may even have been married previously - she's so much older than George.
The only John Everly I can see on 1871 is 39 and a glove maker not a school teacher and married to Margaret. She is Head by 1881 but recorded as married but I don't know if he's my chap or not.
Did they round the ages up and/or down at all in 1861??
Sorry to drone on - don't worry too much,
Thanks, Tricia

Brilliant, Steve.
I didn't have the 1851 census. Very interesting because, apart from verifying Everley as the surname, Ruth and George are now a lot closer in age. Looks even more as though he may have been illegitimate. I'll send for the birth certificate.
As George has re-married by 1871 and also died, leaving 2nd wife looking after his children and one of their own, I assumed she kicked the bucket cos she was a lot older. And, I always tell other people not to make assumptions.
Go, on tell me the ages are rounded down!
I'll leave you in peace, now Tricia
