1841-51 Greater London.
« on: Friday 19 December 08 07:43 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
can someone please look up William Henry ALDRIDGE in the 1841-51 census's in the Greater London area.
He was born 1816, may be either with parents, William John and Mary Ann or with a wife. Possably married 1839, so there may be a child.
Thanks heaps,
Leonie.

Can you narrow things down a bit? There are a dozen or more William ALDRIDGEs living in "Greater London" in 1851, but none born 1816 exactly (a year or two either way, yes) and not all of them born in "Greater London".

So - any idea of place of birth (at least a county)? Any ideas of how great an area of "Greater London" he was living in (north or south of the Thames?)? Any idea of an occupation?

Here is a possible marriage from the FreeBMD has a marriage for a William Henry Aldridge registered in the first quarter of 1839 in St George Hanover Square, London/Middlesex (Volume: 1, Page: 27).

There is one William Aldridge in St George Hanover Square on the 1841 census as follows:

William Aldridge, 40, lodging home keeper, not born in county
Ann Aldridge, 25, born in county
Emily Aldridge, 1, born in county

(Note: For the 1841 census enumerators were instructed to round down the age to the nearest 5 years of every person 15 years of age and older.)

Back to the marriage, there is only one Ann listed on the same page as William Henry Aldridge and her name was Ann Auburn.

I couldn't find this family on the 1851 census.

Thank you.
William Henry ALDRIDGE was christened at St Luke, Finsbury, London, in March, 1816.
By 1851 he may have migrated to Australia, I'll have a look at immigration sites.
His sister Mary Ann ALDRIDGE was married at St Geo. Hanover Sq. 1838, so this looks promising.   Smiley
Thanks again,
Leonie.

PS. In the 1841 census for Middlesex, Mary Ann is shown as "Born in County". So is Finsbury in the county of Middlesex? Sorry, I have no idea of the size of Greater London  Huh I do know that more people live there than in the whole of Queensland.  Cheesy

Hi,

Greater London (the administrative bit) was created in 1965;  covering the City of London and all 32 London boroughs.   The term had been in use earlier but probably not as early as 1841.

Finsbury was in Middlesex  in 1841 (it still is to those of us from the county!)

This is all very confusing. Huh
The county map I've been using for years, I got it from the local Family History group, doesnt have Middlesex at all?! I never noticed before, yet so many of my ancestors come from London, Middlesex.
Has the county been disolved or something? Poor Nanny Jan Sad

From The Dictionary of Genealogy, 1994 by T.V.H. FitzHugh:

Quote
In 1889 the Administrative County of London was formed from the City of London, and parts of Middlesex, Kent and Surrey and was divided into boroughs. In 1963 this County was replaced by Greater London which also took in the rest of Middlesex and parts of Essex and Herts as well as some county boroughs. New London boroughs were then formed.

There are maps of the area at the GenUKI website page for Middlesex:
