Dumbartonshire MI
« on: Friday 19 December 08 04:33 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone have access to the book on Monumental Inscriptions (pre 1855) Dumbartonshire who could look up some records for me?

I'm trying to locate the following death records of

John Manners d 21 Nov 1840 I think in Dunbarton but really could be anywhere in the area or even at sea. He was married to

Agnes (nee Montgomery), died 26 Apr 1851 and their son

John Manners d I think in Aug 1841. and his wife

Margaret Campbell d I think around 1855.

I would dealy love to know what cemetery they are buried at and if the parents of John and Agnes are listed on their graves.

I hope to visit Scotland from Australia in May 2009 and it would be much easier to plan my itinery if I knew where I was going.

Thanks

Shirley

Hi Shirley,
John Manners died 21 Nov 1840 and is buried with Agnes his wife, sons Wm , John and Daughter Catherine in Dumbarton churchyard. He is listed as stone number 65 in the map done by the Mitchell in about 1969.You will see the book in the Dumbarton library or purchase it at the: Glasgow & West of Scotland Family History Society. www.gwsfhs.org.uk

I managed to get to a library that held the MI and discovered that the John, son of John and Agnes Manners was lost at sea, August 184. So I wonder if there would have been a newspaper report? Which newspaper? Dumbarton or Greenock?

Any thoughts?

Hi Jolix and ShirleyX,
I am also interested in MI's in the Dumbarton area.
My gt.greatgrandfather John Dunwoody 1812-1871 was the village blacksmith in Gartocharn, Kilmaronock and had all his children there. When he retired he moved to Cardross where he died on 2.10.1871. He and his wife Mary Ann Battersby 1813-1889 were both born in Antrim N.I. and were Presbyterian. Do you think he would have been buried at Cardross? Mary Ann died in Glasgow.
My great grandfather John Dunwoody b.1854 went to Ireland where he married and stayed. I don't know much about his brothers and sisters other than birth dates from helpful people on this board:
Hellen 1834
Agnes 21.07.1837
Andrew ch. 17.11.1839
Mary 16.08.1842
Jane 9.01.1845
Ann 16.04.1847
William 8.09.1849
Margaret 27.03.1852
David 8.07.1857
Were Presbyterians buried in separate graveyards? If they stayed in the area would they have been buried in Kilmaronock, Dumbarton, Cardross?
Any help would be much appreciated.

I know the Lennox Herald has been out for years, but I would check with Dumbarton and Greenock libraries. Just google them and ask what was available at that time and if they have copies on microfilm etc.

The Mi's we are talking about are one done by the Mitchells when they were recording pre 1855 burials/ MI's. They wanted to record them as registrartion began in Scotland in 1855. When recording a stone and there were other deaths on it after 1855, they would record them also.

This is the only Dunwoodie I found on the Milburn Churchyard Renton CD by Glasgow & West of Scotland FHS:
1.    John Dunwoodie. Died Oct 1871 aged 60 years, His daughter Maggie died 19th Sept 1866? His daughter Mary, at Dunedin NZ 3rd Oct 1888 aged 54 years. His son Andrew, at Onchunga Auckland NZ. 2nd August 1890 aged 50 years. His wife Mary Ann died 5th Feb 1889 aged 77 years. Son John, at sea off Thursday Island Australia 18th July 4 (5 or 6) son William at Onchunga April 1898. Agnes Dunwoodie 1910 aged 72 years.
I hope this helps.
All the stones are also photographed on the CD.

Hi Joe,
Many thanks for that - it has filled in a few gaps. I had no idea I had ancestors in NZ.
I presume John 1812-1871 is buried in Renton with Mary Ann although she died in Glasgow, but do you think this means that Maggie and Agnes are also buried there? I will try to trace the others in NZ.
Thanks again

Re my Manners family search. I managed to make a trip out to Dunbarton Cemetery and was told by the caretaker that the cemetery did not open until 1854 and he could not check the records because seven years ago they had been passed on to the council for digitisation, which to this day has not been done.

I went to the council to enquire but they only have the records from 1854 onwards. I asked where I might locate the earlier graves but no one seems to know.

Apparently the original cemetery was where the main town is now. So what happened to the graves and headstones, where they removed to the new cemetery or are they buried somewhere under the town. I would love to hear from a historian of the area.
