Sill's in Burtersett/Hawes
« on: Friday 19 December 08 16:39 UTC (UK) »

Anyone got any suggestions for tracing 17/18th century ancestors high up in the Yorkshire Dales, Burtersett, Hawes, etc.?

Specifically the Sill's or related surnames?

Got a block after Sylvester, born in 1720ish.

Hi Adrian
Are you wanting to work forward or back here?
It is always helpful if you can say what you know to avoid people duplicating the work.   They get the bit between their teeth and they are off!   In the research I sent you some years ago were details of Sylvester's marriage in 1713 to Jane Metcalf at Aysgarth so his birth must be earlier than 1720.  There is a burial for Sylvester Sill in Hawes in 1761 and Jane Sill, widow, was buried there in 1768.   Their children are known too.    It is getting backwards that was the stumbling block for me so I hope you get some response!   I would love to be able to link my branch in.....

Thanks Andrea,

I'd like to go forwards to find out if we can track them further.

There are also a lot of connections coming backwards, like you're after as well, which is quite some legwork. A lot of minimal info which I'd like to get stuck into next year.

If I find out anything I'll let you know!

Thanks for holding my hand through rootschat!

Andrea:

I have Silvester Sill and Jane Metcalfe married at Aysgarth May 9th 1713 and having 7 children.

The 7th and last child being Thomas Sill bap April 5th 1729 at Burtersett.

He married Elizabeth Lamber of Blean at Stallingbusk Sept 12th 1753 and they had 3 children before Elizabeth died Jan 18th 1758 at Thorns House.

Do you know if then Thomas Sill re-married?

There are 5 marriages recorded at Hawes for Thomas Sill between 1760 and 1765 and I wonder which, if any, relate to this particukar Thomas Sill.

I can only see one baptism for a Thomas Sill in the Wensleydale area about that time but 6 mariages does seem rather a lot!!

I am afraid your guess is as good as mine about remarriages - I am sure I would have noted if any were shown as widower but it might be worth checking the original again.
These are only the ones that are connected with a Thomas or could be.  If you want the others then send me a pm with your address and I will post copies to you.  I have never put them on the computer as they are not my direct line - at least I have not yet found a connection.   My ancestor Francis Sill appears in Durham City in 1804 fathering an illegitimate child.  I have the bastardy bond and his subsequent marriage to Dorothy Robinson in 1807 but have never been able to find a positive birth for him.
How does your line fit in?

Andrea:

Thank you for taking the time to review your notes.

I can make some sort of case for Thomas Sill's marriage to each of the women you quote but in the lack of any hard evidence to prove it either way means that it will have to lay on file as unanswered.

Thanks again for looking.

Interested to see on one of your other posts that you mention Cubeck.  That property is still in the hands of a member of my husband's family.  They owned a lot of farm land in that area from the 1600s - and probably before but I have not got that far!  Sadly, none of it came to us!

Andrea:

The area around Cubeck is one of my main areas of resarch into my family tree.

My mothers mothers family farmed at High Gill Farm for many years until the last unmarried brother sold the farm in the 1970's.
They were the Wilson family and were Humphrey Wilson and Elizabeth (Thwaite) who were married at Aysgarth Nov 26th 1886.

My mothers fathers family farmed at East Scarr Top (along the road from Cubeck) for many years.
They were Thomas Percival and Judith (Heseltine) who were maried July 2nd 1891 at Aysgarth
They took over the farm from the Hird family, yet another close branch of my tree.

My mother still has relations living in Thornton Rust.

Like you, the farms went elsewhere!!

If I can help with any of the families in that location, then please let me know.
