Patrick Mulloy died 28th Nov 1876
« on: Friday 19 December 08 20:02 UTC (UK) »

I have a photograph of a grave in Church of The Holy Family Ardara.
On the gravestone it says here lies the remains of Patrick  Mulloy died 28th Nov 1896 aged 46 years I think it could be my gggrandfather the date fits and he was the only Patrick Mulloy in the area that could have been buried in that graveyard at the time as I looked up the griffiths valuation for 1857-1864 and he was the only Patrick Mulloy head of household. I know records are scarce but if was possible to find out where would I contact?

kind regards Jane

the town of Ardara appears with Glenties in Slaters Directory of 1870 and included there are the following Mulloy listings..

Patrick Mulloy, Boot & Shoe Makers section.

Charles Mulloy - Emigration Agent
Charles, Mulloy - Grocer
Connell Molloy - Grocer
Patrick Mulloy - Grocer

Patrick Mulloy - Leather Seller

Mulloy Charles - Timber, Iron &. Coal Merchants

(all Glenties)

and  Louis Drake Mulloy is the sub-inspector at the Glenties CONSTABULARY STATION.

I dont know of any parish records on-line at the moment. County Donegal is next up to be included in the National Archives census on-line project - should be available some time early next year (1911 first, with 1901 to follow later).

not sure which date applies to your query - 1876 or 1896 but theres there's a Bernard Molloy, county bailiff in the town of Ardara listed in Slaters of 1894

My Patrick Mulloy was a farmer in the townland of Meenavally Ardara, Bernard Mulloy sheriffs bailiff and emergency man was his son.   What would an emergency man have done?

If you go back to your first post and click the modify button you can correct the title and the date (1876 or 1896?)- the title of the first post is what shows up on the board listing.

thats all there is - for the towns it's a basic listing of many Officials, Judges , MPs etc but also '...information on the principal private and commercial residents of many of thee larger towns and villages..'. e.g. in the 1894 ed for Ardara there are 12 principle private residents listed, details of the medical officer, constabulary, priest, schools etc, ~60 businesses and one farmer.

The later editions usually include more details on farmers etc but generally only the principle business owners - i.e most of the employees in the towns would not be shown.

there is some basic information on the town itself which I could sent you by pm if you are interested..

Here is an article about woodhall house in the Slaters Directory for Ardara 1894 it lists Bernard Mulloy as County Bailiff, I wonder if he worked for the Major General Tredenick who sold his lands to his tennants in 1911 that is the year my grandfather emigrated to America.

Jane  What does everyone else think?

If you obtain a copy of the death cert of Patrick Molloy, died 1876 or 1896?, you may be able to ascertain from the informant if this is your Patrick Molloy

Ok, (your opening message states 1896 in the body of the message).
If Bernard registered the death, then you would have the evidence it was your Patrick.

Hi Derry Lass,

Thanks for the advice Bernard would only have been 11 at the time he was born in 1865 and he was the oldest child.  If it is Bernards dad they would have been desperate so that would maybe explain why Bernard would take on such a dispised job.......   I've often wondered why he took on the the sheriffs bailiff job in Ardara
