Melrose Grant Sisters
« on: Tuesday 23 December 08 10:50 UTC (UK) »

OK, I feel a bit silly posting this as I have managed to trace my Grant ancestors much further back but this mystery eludes me after nearly 4 years. Perhaps descendants of these ladies are reading..

My great-grandfather William Grant was born in Melrose in 1878 and was killed in WW1 in 1916, His parents were George Grant who died in Hawick in 1930 and Margaret Knowles who died in 1882. George remarried after her death to a Jane Hay.

Prior to Margarat's marriage, she had a daughter Helen Goodall Grant Knowles (on all censuses, noted as Helen Grant) born in 1873. George and Margaret had other sons, two whom died in infancy and one whom died in 1822. They also had two daughters Jane born in 1877 and Janet born in 1879, all at Dingleton in Melrose.

Tray as I might, I have never been able to trace what became of these three daughters. I have looked for marriages, on English censuses (my great-Grandfather William went to Northumberland). I would love to know if anyone can throw a fresh light on these ladies. Sadly, there is nobody left to ask. My Dad thinks his Aunt used to talk of an Aunt Janet but other than that, we are stumped.

I'm not holding out for much of a miracle but it's worth a try..

Many thanks,  Anne
