Margaret Kilroe c.1892
« on: Wednesday 24 December 08 11:29 UTC (UK) »

This is my first foray into the Irish side of my roots so please be gentle with me.  Smiley

I don't have much information on my Great Grandmother but from her marriage cert in 1915 she was 23, this would point to a birth year of about 1892. Her parents are showing as Peter Kilroe, Farmer, deceased and Hester Kilroe, M.S. Shearin (not quite sure of this, I will post the relevant part of the cert and see what you all think).

My dad tells me she was from Ireland and that her father worked in the Tullamore Distillery and this basically is the only info we have and I don't know where to look to try and find out more so would be very grateful for any help at all.

since Margarets birth looks to be after 1864 there should be a civil registration record - see the GRO website www.groireland.ie

the surname Kilroe is included in Griffiths Land valuation (1847 and 1864) with seven entries in Offaly, most of the rest seem to be fromn County Roscommon.  I see just one Shearin entry for King's county - and thats a Catherine

http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_form.php

Griffiths only includes land-owners and people with long leases, so not everybody is included.

- I assume the M.S. Shearan bit stands for Maiden Surname ..

A wedding of Kate Dalton to Patrick Kilroe of  Cloghanhill in 1878 might narrow down the area you are looking for. Smiley

M.S. Shearin (not quite sure of this, I will post the relevant part of the cert and see what you all think).

Could the "M.S." be a badly scanned "Alias"?

Scottish certificates use M.S. for maiden surname.

Many thanks for the help and the links everyone. Sorry I should have said that the M.S. stands for Maiden Surname. We've come to the conclusion that the name is definitely Sheeran.

Thanks to a member's help I've managed to find someone that will do some checking for me in Dublin so finger's crossed I may start to get somewhere with this line at last.

Hi Bob,

Margaret married David MacKay in 1915 in Inverness, Scotland, they had 6 children that I know of - 2 girls and 4 boys all born and brought up in Inverness. Margaret died in Inverness in January 1967. Does any of this ring any bells at all? Would be great if we had a link.

I know this is a long shot but my Mum regularly visited the Kilroe's in Tullamore and surrounds and also Helen Kilroe in Portadown. Are you by any chance connected to Armstrong/ Simmons

Hi Caroline,

I'm no further forward with my Kilroes at all I'm afraid, just about all I know about them is what is in this post  although I have been told that Margaret had a brother who was known as Father Paddy. I'm not aware of any Armstrong/Simmons connections but there could of course be some that I haven't managed to discover yet.

I've had to take a break from Family research for the last couple of months as my youngest son was involved in a horrific accident, had a lot of broken bones and internal injuries and was in hospital for 6 weeks, he is making a good recovery and came home from hospital last week but is still in a wheelchair so it'll probably be a while yet before I can get back into it, I'll keep your post in mind and see what I can find out.

Sorry to hear about your son. Wishing him a speedy recovery and take care of yourself too.
Do you know what religion the Kilroe family were? I think the family that I am looking for were Presbyterian

I now have some more information on my Kilroes thanks to the 1911 Irish census being online. They were Roman Catholic and Peter and Hester had been married 32 years by 1911, they had 12 children, 11 of which were still living. They were living at 1 Derrygrogan Little, Ballycommon, Tullamore, King's County with 8 of their 11 living children. Mary was a Laundress at 5 Church Street, Tullamore, King's County, Catherine was a General Domestic Servant at 80 High Street, Tullamore, King's County. I believe My Great Grandmother Margaret was in England at this time (from a letter written to her in 1914 from a friend in Germany).

Below are the children of Peter Kilroe and Hester (Esther) Sheeran:
1.   Mary Kilroe was born on Jul. 20, 1879 in Tullamore, King's County, Ireland
2.   Catherine Kilroe was born on Oct. 29, 1880 in Kilmoney, Cork, Ireland
3.   Hester Kilroe was born Between Jan. 1883 and Mar. 1883 in Tullamore, King's County, Ireland
4.   Thomas Kilroe was born Between Jul. 1884 and Sep. 1884 in Tullamore, King's County, Ireland
5.   Peter Kilroe was born Between Jan. 1889 and Mar. 1889 in Tullamore, King's County, Ireland
6.   Margaret "Peggy" Kilroe was born Between Jan. 1891 and Mar. 1891 in Tullamore, King's County, Ireland and died on Jan. 2, 1967 in Inverness at the age of 75.
7.   Michael Kilroe was born Between Apr. 1895 and Jun. 1895 in Tullamore, King's County, Ireland
8.   James Kilroe was born Between Jan. 1896 and Mar. 1896 in Tullamore, King's County, Ireland
9.   Annie Kilroe was born Between Oct. 1897 and Dec. 1897 in Tullamore, King's County, Ireland
10.   Christopher Kilroe was born Between Jan. 1900 and Mar. 1900 in Tullamore, King's County, Ireland
11.   Marcella Kilroe was born Between Oct. 1902 and Dec. 1902 in Tullamore, King's County, Ireland

Peter died in 1913 aged 57 and Hester died in 1912 aged 54, both in Tullamore, King's County.

So I am quite a bit further on, although it will be a while before finances permit me to buy the certs.
