We are looking for more information on a Susan (or Susannah) Maria JANVIN who was born in Mountmellick about 1822 or 1823. She went to Australia in 1841 on the ship 'Comet' with a Margaret Cullam and married William Simpson in 1843.
Her surname has also been recorded as Janvill in some records.
We don't know the given names of her parents (noted as 'unknown' on her death certificate - her son didn't know either) so any information from parish records would be very much appreciated.
This is the first Irish ancestor we've come across so any advice about other ways to get a bit further in the search of this line would also be welcome.
Thank you.

Hello again Jack.
I have since found out that Susan was an Episcopalian and had a brother (name unknown) who paid her fare to Australia, and she was listed as in the care of George and Peter Cullam (Margaret's brothers?).
I haven't had any luck tracing these Cullams for a clue either.

Thank you Anne-Marie for that information. As you say, I can now cross the Quaker records off the list of possible sources of information.
On the downside, the list of sources has dwindled almost to nothing, and I've almost resigned myself to finding out something by accident.
As an update to my first post, I've since decided on the basis of her children's names (we know a bit more about her husband's family) that Susan's father or brother was probably called Joseph. And we've uncovered another three Irish ancestors, all just as elusive as this one. Susan's departure was some 20 years after the other branches.
I'm thinking of trying to get a handle on the history of the area (when I have some time) to help me create a few more scenarios about how her family came to be in Mountmellick, thus giving me a few more possible leads.
As everyone on this site probably knows, hope springs eternal.

Hi Vaison, There is no mention of the Orange surname in my records, both from Laois County Council and my own. If you go to Mountmellick Marriage records you will find a marriage in 1826 between John Keeran & Mary Orange. The only Orange surname is Laois at the moment is in Portarlington and perhaps you could contact them to see if they have any family history. Regards Jack

Hello again SeanMac.
We haven't found out much more about the elusive Susannah Janvin but we have come up with some (albeit slender) details to keep us searching.
We saw a shipping record which showed that Susannah's reference was provided by one Valentin Labalt (maybe Labolt). Could he give us a lead to more about Susannah - if we find out who he was.
We've also been looking at some of her children's extended family and noticed that the name Franklin comes up a few times as a second name. Her own son no. 6 had this as his second name. Her first son was named after his paternal grandfather and third son after his father. So we're also wondering if second son, Joseph, was named after his maternal grandfather.
All this is long-winded way of presuming on your generosity and asking you two things:
1. Does the name Labalt come up in your records of Laois?
2. Is there a Joseph Franklin in those records?
I'd be really grateful for any light from your records.
Thank you.
