Percy John NEWTON
« on: Monday 29 December 08 17:59 UTC (UK) »

Hello there,

My original posting is under Staffs-surname Newton. it was kindly suggested i post here.....so here goes........

I am searching for my great uncle Percy John NEWTON. He was born in 1872 in Newcastle under Lyme Staffordshire. In 1896 he married Mary Ann SHAW at Stoke on Trent.

I can't locate him in 1901 and was hoping to find him in 1911 have now checked and he's not there  Cry though he may turn up when its fully released.

I have a feeling he may have emigrated as i have in my possession 2 of the same photo sent to his mother and sister. He signs himself Percy, so he didn't change his name but his wife was signed as Pollie, so am guessing thats her nickname for Mary Ann. There are 2 children a boy and a girl. Iam guessing it was taken in the early 1900's. His mother died in 1930 so definitely before then. The photo has lilies around the border, so not the usual English ones.

I would welcome any help or advise.

Cheers and a Happy New Year  Smiley

Hi BrummieGal

From several months ago the UK outgoing passenger lists have been available on-line, - they cover the period 1890 to some time in the 1950s, - I'm not sure on that latter date without checking.

I've only just 're-joined' RootsChat after a long time away, and, from posts that I've read in the last few days, I'm unsure if it's OK to post the web address of the website concerned.  Put it this way, if you use a search engine (am I allowed to mention Google? Wink ) and search on 'UK outgoing passenger lists' you'll quickly find the site, which is a very well known site, - subscription or pay per view, but don't go spending credits on a digitised image unless you're near certain that there's a match (albeit that that's the only way to see the full details on the passenger list, - the less expensive transcription doesn't provide all the details shown).

Once someone has been found in these records, it can also  be worthwhile looking for the arrival record of the emigrant is their new country, as there can be more details.

The great advantage of these records is that they cover all destinations outside Europe and the Mediterranean, e.g. N America, Oz, NZ, Far East, South Africa.  Many people imagine that emigration almost automatically meant the USA, which can lead to problems in later generations when that has become 'established fact' !
