Hi Matt, I think I need some help re the Cutlers   Embarrassed

I asked on GR for a look at the census with Joseph Cutler and Frances and it looks as though they didn't have the above children after all  Shocked

It seems as though there is Joseph Cutler who married Frances Ann West and they had a daughter Elizabeth born c1869

BUT

There is an Edwin Cutler who married a Frances Ellis (?) in 1857.  They had Clara, Frederick, Alice, Robert, George, Francis, Betsey, Edwin and Lilian.  Father Edwin had died by 1881.

I can't remember how long I have had the Cutler info or where it came from - (I'm much more meticulous these days than I used to be!)   Roll Eyes

You mentioned about Joseph's son Frederick but it looks like it may have been Edwin's son  Undecided

What do you think   Huh

If you see what I mean?  The spelling of 'Francis' is obviously incorrect and that could apply to the 3 year old also I guess.

Edwin Cutler 37
Francis Cutler 33
Clara Cutler 13

Yes the shop is still there but is now owned by a large newsagent chain (Martins or Dillons I think).  I'm sure it was Roger Druce who ran the shop when I used to go there.  My Mum lives just outside the village (in between Lane End and Cadmore End) but runs the Lane End WI so knows lots of the 'old folk' as well as having lots of memories of her own.
Somewhere I have got a book with lots of the history of Lane End, I shall have to go and find it to see if any of your Cutlers or Wests are in it.....

Oh yes and just to show what a small world it is - the Druce's used to own my Mum's house before she did (back in the 1960's).
She still sees Roger Druce about quite alot, although he has been in hospital recently as he had a nasty accident while cutting back some trees (not sure exactly what happened but village rumour is that he cut off the branch his ladder was attached to  Undecided)

Gosh it IS a small world!    Roll Eyes

I will try and have another go at that photo tomorrow. It may just ring a bell with someone.

I hadn't realised that Lane End was quite a complex - it was always spoken of as a cluster of houses..........at the end of a lane!!

A bit of a longshot, but just wondered if anyone recognises these cottages at Lane End?

There are a couple of possibilities which I need to check out - I'm over there at the weekend so will have a look.
Now I must go and hunt for that book....!

Checked where I thought they were with my Mum and she agrees.  They are not in Lane End itself, but in an even smaller village/hamlet called Bolter End, which basically consists of one road (Bolter End Lane) and is in the parish of Lane End.  The cottages are still there and look almost the same from the outside.  They are in between a pub (the Brickmakers Arms) and a Methodist Chapel (although that is now been converted into a house called Chapel House) and are called Chapel Row (postcode HP14 3NE).  There were originally 5 cottages although nos 1 & 2 have definitely been knocked together to make one house.

The picture I've attached is from Virtual Earth if you want to look at surrounding areas and where it is in relation to Lane End.

You are a gem JLo   Grin

Thank you so much for that info.  Have to admit that Bolter End Lane doesn't ring any bells but that's by the by.  I love the aerial view.  Many thanks again. R.

Hi JLo, I have just been looking through a file and found my dad's end of term or...'terminal report' as it was called (!) from Wheeler End Council School in 1917.  I googled the school and found this link and wondered if the nursery on the link was once Wheeler End Council School....?

Your mum will probably know as she seems invaluable on all this info.  Tell her she's wonderful.  Thanks. R.

Definitely one and the same! Mum used to run the local brownie pack in that very building  Smiley

Bolter End Lane rings lots of bells for me as that is where I lived for 20 odd years and where my Mum still lives now  Grin

Dad was born in one of the cottages above!  His name was William West - his father was also William and his mother was Daisy (nee Druce).  I presume he lived there for most of his young life - actually, his end of term report was 1927 not 1917 as I said earlier. (sorry).  He would have been 14 when he left school.  I think he went to work in a shop but then later joined the Salvation Army.

His parents eventually moved to Desborough Avenue in High Wycombe and I have an aunt who still lives there.

My great grandfather Walter West apparently ran a soup kitchen in Wycombe - I have a picture of him and some of his young customers.  Would love to know more about this but don't know where to start.

Just imagine, all this help simply because 'Matt' asked about maps.  I'm so glad he did.
