Hello Selena and Royd

I will start with your family Selena as this is the one I was researching.

The person you have traced back to so far is Josiah, not Jonah.  They are the same person but for some reason he has been recorded as Jonah in the 1851 census.  His wife was Sarah (or Sally) King SMITH and they married at West Wycombe on 23 Sep 1833.  There were eleven children from this union:

George bp 7 Dec 1834
James bp 15 Oct 1837
Kezia bp 29 May 1836
Josiah bp 29 Dec 1839
Shadrach bp 30 May 1841
Isaac bp 20 Aug 1843
Emily bp 16 Aug 1846
Betsy bp 16 Jul 1848
Sidney bp 29 Sep 1850
Barbara Ann bp 19 Jun 1853
Edwin Aylmer bp 27 Apr 1856

The first five children were baptised at West Wycombe and the remainder at Lane End.

Josiah DRUCE was baptised at Fingest on 25 Feb 1810.  He was the fifth of six children of George and Joan(na) DRUCE, nee MORRIS, who had married at West Wycombe on 15 Feb 1800.  Their other children (all baptised at Fingest) were:

Edmund bp 19 Oct 1800
Keziah bp 1 May 1803
Tabitha bp 6 Jul 1805
Phebe bp 9 Aug 1807
Emily bp 20 May 1821

George DRUCE of Bolter End was buried at Fingest on 30 June 1829, aged 54.  This puts his year of birth at approximately 1775 which is a little out because he was baptised at Amersham, Bucks on 10 March 1771.  He was the eldest child of Thomas DRUCE and Susannah OXLADE who had married at Great Marlow on 7 May 1770.

Thomas and Susannah baptised two other children at Amersham - Henry on 6 Jan 1773 and Jane on 30 Jul 1775 - before moving on to Fingest where they baptised Charlotte on 9 Jun 1777.  Their next child, John, was baptised at Beaconsfield on 4 July 1781.  The family then moved back to Fingest where Thomas was buried on 11 Oct 1801.  I don't have a burial for Susannah although this was probably at Fingest after 1835.

Thomas DRUCE was the son of Benjamin DRUCE and Jane (unknown) and was baptised at Amersham on 27 May 1744.  The other children of Benjamin and Jane (all baptised at Amerhsam) were:

Mary bp 27 Jun 1742
William bp 29 Jun 1746
Benjamin bp 24 Sep 1749
Ann bp 7 Jul 1751
Lucy bp 28 Apr 1754
Elizabeth bp 2 May 1756

Jane, the wife of Benjamin DRUCE, a smith, was buried at Amersham on 2 Aug 1767.  Benjamin was buried at Fingest on 3 Aug 1776.  This was not far from the parish of Ibstone in which he had been baptised on 28 May 1716, son of Thomas DRUCE and Mary WILLIS who had married at Newnham Murren, Oxfordshire in 1714.  The othere children of Thomas and Mary baptised at Ibstone were:

Lucy Maria bp 15 Jun 1718
Mary bp 26 Apr 1721
Hanage (or Hannah) bp 21 Apr 1723

Thomas DRUSE, a poor man, was buried at Ibstone on 4 Jan 1739 and Mary DRUSE, widow, was buried at Ibstone on 8 Jul 1746.

That's as far as I have got with the family but my thoughts are that they came from Oxfordshire - possibly Goring.

Royd - thank you for your patience in waiting for me to recite the above.  Unfortunately I am not able to add anything at all to your line, other than to say that Samuel DRUCE was not baptised at Great Marlow.  It is possible that he was born there but there is no baptism for him in the Great Marlow parish registers.

You give a date of 1779 for Samuel's birth which is interesting as that is where there is a gap in the children of Thomas and Susannah DRUCE.  I have long felt that he should belong to this couple as he appears in Fingest with other DRUCEs who are all related.  Do you have any evidence for Samuel's birth in the year 1779 and for his birth in Marlow?

Hope the above helps you both.

Oh yes Orpheus - the Eureka Partnership is resending the books. They cannot explain the disappearance and neither can we. They insist on having it posted to a private address

Hi Orpheus, here is what my informant passed on to me: (apologies for the verbosity!)

"Hannah married Samuel Druce son of Druce on 5 Oct 1807 in St. Bartholomew, Fingest, Bucks. Samuel was born c1779 in Marlow, Bucks and married 5/10/1807 in St. Bartholomew, Fingest, Bucks.  He died between 1851 and 1861.

1841 Census : probably the Samuel Druse aged 55/60, living at Horton Bridge Field, Hillingdon (which appears to be a building site given the number of single male brickmen). Occupation - bricker.
(census reference HO107/656/4 Folio 11 page 14. note, his place of birth is given as within the county of Middlesex.

1851 census : aged 71, living in Money Lane, West Drayton, Middlesex at the home of his widowed daughter-in-law (Ann Druce). Occupation - brickfield labourer. (ref: HO107/1697 Folio 26 page 13) His place of birth is stated as Bucks, Marlow.

Marriage: Buckinghamshire:- Registers of Marriages 1582-1812. Marriages at Fingest,, 1607 - 1812
Volume 3 -5th October 1807 Saml. Druce & Hannah Leech. Witnesses : Sophia Druce (possibly his sister?)

Death : High Wycombe records 1/4 March 1857 (vol. 3a page 267) - relates to Samuel Druce an agricultural labourer of Wycombe Union Workhouse. This is not Samuel the brickmaker.

Biography: occupation : brickmaker (see death cert of Hannah Druce)

Hannah's death cert reads :1864 at Cadmore End, Lewknor Uphill, aged 87 widow of Samuel Druce (brickmaker).

Hope this helps     Roll Eyes

Kind regards. R.

Hello Royd

Thank you for the information on Samuel DRUCE.  Your mention of the witness at his wedding being Sophia DRUCE leads me to think that he may have been a son of Benjamin DRUCE and Ann HOBSON who married at Ibstone, Bucks on 6 Nov 1773.  They baptised four children at Fingest - Benjamin on 3 Jul 1774, Richard on 8 Jun 1777, Sophia on 4 Mar 1787 and Joseph on 14 Jun 1789.  As you can see, there is a large gap in these baptisms into which Samuel might fit.  Benjamin and Ann also buried two children at Fingest - Thomas on 20 Feb 1794 and Lucy on 16 Sep 1790.  Neither of these children were baptised in the parish.

Benjamin DRUCE was buried at Fingest on 6 April 1834 aged 85 years which puts his date of birth at around 1749.  He was baptised at Amersham, Bucks, on 24 Sep 1749, the fourth child of Benjamin and Jane DRUCE.  See my previous post for more information on Benjamin and Jane.

Hi Orpheus,

Thank very, very much for that information.  Amazing to have gone back that far.  I can't wait to add to my tree and tell the family.

Many thanks again,

Selena, Royd

I have  bought from the Bucks FHS the Lane End Parish Registers. It has ALOT of Druce mentions and I wondered if you'd be interested if I sent some to you both? Just send me some info (ie children of Isaac or burial of Isaac or whatever) and I'll send you the data

Hi Matt, what a kind thought   Smiley

I have loads of Druces in my tree and they're a different branch to that of Selena but we may find we have a common ancestor at some stage!

Well, here goes: could you possibly see if you have any of the following for me?

Samuel born 1779 (possibly Marlow). He married Hannah Leech c1806.

They had the following children:

Mary 1807 died as an infant I think
Mary 1809
David 1812
Elizabeth 1814
James 1817
John 1817 (?)
Joseph c1821

Many thanks. R.

Hmm the Lane End Parish Registers start at 1832 so I though first of burials. Nope, none of the ones you said.

Marriage 21 Apr 1845   by Banns
Richard X BUTLER, aged fa, Bachelor of Lane End, Labourer son of William Butler, Labourer
Elizabeth Ann X DRUCE, aged fa, Spinster of Lane End daughter of Samuel Druce, Labourer
Witnesses John Duce John Sharp

Marriage 23 Feb 1835   by Banns
Thomas X GOOD, Bachelor of Lane End
Sarah WAYLAND, Spinster of Lane End
Witnesses Samuel X Druce John Harding Sharp

They're the only marriages that mention a Samuel as a father or witness...

Here is an index of children baptised:
Children of JOSIAH and SALLY DRUCE
Children of GEORGE and ELIZA DRUCE
Children of ISAAC and SARAH DRUCE
no mentions of Druce Baptisms after 1881.

There are a few burials too...

~~~
There are a few West's but they're only marriages
Sorry I couldn't help more but any later ones then ask me  Cheesy
Hi Matt, thanks for that.  I seem to be fairly up to date with my later Druces and have a feeling that Selena will benefit more from your disc.  I don't have the Isaac branch - I think they're Selena's.  Thanks. R.   Grin
Wow!!  Thank you Matt.  I have been off on the other half of my tree for a bit and then work got in the way (still is!) so I haven't really got into the DRuces again.  This is great.  I sent off to buy the Bucks parish regs but have not received them or heard anything so had given up.
This is great info.  they certainly had lots of children back then.
Thank you for your time on this.
Matt's done really well hasn't he Selena?  Trust my lot not to be part of it!!  Actually I wonder if they were non conformist - or which ever church was nearest to where they lived!!
Now Matt, don't think I've asked you this before, but do you know if I can get hold of the records for St. Lawrence's at West Wycombe.  I've sent an email to one of the Bucks Genealogy sites but have had no response as yet.  Many of my early West family seemed to have been baptised there and I'd like to verify and explore further.  I'm willing to purchase a disc or whatever (at a reasonable price of course).
Kind regards, R.
