John Adamson born 1804 married Thornton Dale
« on: Thursday 01 January 09 15:10 UTC (UK) »

I have come to a brick wall with my ancestor John Adamson (a bit ironically, since he was a stone mason and brickmaker).  According to his gravestone he was born in Yorkshire in 1804.  He was married in Thornton Dale in 1828, and in the register he is recorded as being "of this parish".  He emigrated to Canada in about 1832 with his wife's family.

I have not been able to find any record of his baptism.  My best guess at the moment is that his parents were Samuel Adamson and Sarah Sanderson who were having kids in Norton by Malton in the 1780s and 1790s.  "My" John Adamson's first son was named Samuel and his second daughter was named Sarah, so the naming pattern fits.  Also, Samuel's brother John was a brickmaker in Norton.  Samuel and Sarah were both dead by 1811, so John might have grown up with him.  One problem though: according to the IGI, Samuel and Sarah had a son John  baptized in 1799.  A little early.  And according to the IGI submitted, this John was born in 1795 and died in 1853.  (My John died in 1856.)  John Adamson the Norton brickmaker had a son John in 1806, but he died as an infant.

I would be very grateful if anyone could give any help with this.

Hi
Have you looked at the original parish register for Norton?   A lot of the entries on the IGI are submitted but there are a few extracted ones.  Looking at those might give a few more clues as they often mention occupations etc.  You can order any film to search at your nearest LDS centre - worldwide and listed on familysearch.  I expect you have done this.   It looks as if early records for Thornton Dale are not on the IGI - unless the church was founded late.  Genuki.com might help there.
Might the family have left wills?   Or alternatively be mentioned in the parish relief records?  Apprenticeship records?  Manorial records - they might have worked for a big house locally so there may be bills and receipts in their archives.
Just a few thoughts.   Once you are back that far it is hard.

Yes, I have checked out the originial parish records for Norton.  That is how I came across the fact that the John Adamson who was born in 1806 died as an infant.  Unfortunately, he was my prime candidate.  Thanks for the other suggestions.

Hi!

My family comes from this area, so I hope this info might be of some help.

Ellerburn (also Ellerburne), Farmanby, and Kirkdale are sometimes lumped in with Thornton-le-Dale.

If the date is off, I did find a John Adamson born in Norton by Malton, christened 9 Feb 1806, son of John and Hannah Adamson.

Hope this helps,
Rupie
