Where is Elizabeth Benstead nee Okey after 1881?
« on: Friday 02 January 09 09:56 UTC (UK) »

Elizabeth Benstead (nee Okey) born Ely 1856 (father Thomas Okey, mother Mary Annn Cross) was my husband's gg grandmother via her illegitimate  son Leonard Okey who was her only child (as far as we know). Her husband Reuben Benstead (married 1875) turns up as a lodger in the 1891 census as a widower! and 1901 census as married? We cannot find any information on Elizabeth in the 1891 or 1901 census or death index (searched detailed registers for for Benstead and Okey and someone looked up Ely HT parish register for me).

It appears Leonard was taken under the wing of Reuben's brother Benjamin as he turns up in 1891 in the Royal Marines in Chatham Barracks where  Benjamin is also a sergeant major so it seems likely something happened between 1881 and 1891 like Elizabeth's death.

There is a BMD death for an Elizabeth Okey in Sep 1886 Ely age 27 but it is not her!

Any ideas where to go from here?

In 1891 what appears to be Reuben is actually shown as "S" - single, not widower. Perhaps Elizabeth had left him, or vice versa

In 1891 Leonard appears on the same census page in the same squad headed by Arthur Oakey sergeant, single 33 born Ely - was he the connection to the RM rather than a Benstead?

My mistake- it is S(single)!

Elizabeth Oakey had a brother Arthur born 1861 and it could be him (many lied about their age when joining up - Leonard did too!). Can't find Arthur in 1901 either?

Perhaps he was in South Africa fighting in the Boer War
