If William died in 1882 have you considered the possibility that the rest might have finished up in the Workhouse?

My Maternal Great Gran ~ Polly Burge

That's a helluvva good point, Linda! Rather too many of my folk knew the inside of the Work Houses  Sad

Would they be listed separately somewhere then?

Meanwhile, I'm on a roll here! Dancing around in my chair (much more of this and I'll have The Cranberries on!  Grin) I do believe I've Finally cracked the Burge Enigma!

Polly, to the left there, has eluded me for ever. Mary Elizabeth, born 1860 in Exeter, says the census. Well, so were her younger sisters, Jane and Susan. Blah, blah, blah ..... thread becomes a saga ..... Wells! I've just found All Three missing, Exeter girls, listed as born in Wells! Each one in her proper year. Just several miles off base.

Racking my brain here; Why did Bill always say Exeter when, for three separate years, it was Wells? Close. But .....  Shocked Hot damn! The light dawns! Maybe he just Registered them in Wells? Perhaps there was something about the Exeter Registers? That would explain everything. Oh god, it's going to be Agony, waiting for these Cert's to get here!

And there's more. I've just this minute found another Louisa Burge. Registered as born in Weymouth, 1881. I'm betting they had a replacement!  Wink

My head's spinning. So Much to sit and stew on ~ till these Cert's arrive  Wink

Drat. Just had to edit that. Confused a Weymouth with a Wells there. See above; Head spinning.

Thanks again, you two. Unfortunately, a root about among the Workhouses didn't unearth them either. I have a sneaking niggle that they might have shipped out to Eire, to be honest.

Reasoning? Just a snippet of 'family folklore' I picked up about Polly there. And the simple fact that they all, quite genuinely appear to have simply vanished.

Anyway, yeppers; The Workhouse records are good for a look at, aren't they? I'm afraid I started sniggering as I wondered what was the official difference between an " Idiot ", " Imbecile " and a " Lunatic "!

When I came across " Jacob Curtis ~ Blind Blacksmith " I'm afraid I spat beer everywhere and still can't stop laughing about it! In fact, I'm in tears now!  Grin

Better give this a rest for the night. Go and do something else  Wink

Smiley Hyah, Linda. No, I didn't. Not yet. But, the in depth searching I got done during that intense period Did lead me to crack so much more about my Burge's. Now I'm working another line for a bit, as I wait for some of most exciting BC's ever to arrive.

Turns out they had another Louisa too. Poor kid didn't make it. So this is Louisa 2, obviously. And, once I have her papered, I'll use the old fashioned methods to finger tip search out her marriage.

This really is proving one of the most exciting phases of the work. I'd 'given up on' these lot ~ as much as we ever, truly give up on our dead rellies!  Wink

Really helped to have the support of you people on here. Ye generosity of spirit is truly inspiring.

Recovering your hint will be easy now.  Ancestry has just unveiled its "new look", and now when viewing someone's profile, there is a tab marked "Hints", where you will find all hints, both new and previously rejected.

Huh Just shot off and looked at my own Profile, Nick. Inside and out. No such button there ~ yet. I guess they're working their way through us?

You don't look at your own profile - you look at the person for whom you lost the hint.

Bugger! I found the lost hint ..... and it was a complete duffer after all!  Sad

Hey ho. Well, thanks for a great tip, anyway, Nick. Now at least we all know we can back track with a couple of clicks. Full marks to yeself and A.com for pointing this out. I'm sure plenty more people, following this ones title, will benefit from this result  Cool

Hi Steve

What a shame!  But at least you've made some new friends.
