Roebuck/Greasely Ancestory
« on: Saturday 03 January 09 11:41 UTC (UK) »

I live in New Zealand and was wondering if anyone would know information regarding a Dorothy Hirst Roebuck of Barnsley, born 1893 in Dewsbury, West Riding.
I have  two addresses - 15 Meadow Street, Barnsley - were she may have lived with her father and sister, Constance(?),
the second address is 60 Newhill Road, Barnsley where she lived with her husband (Joseph Albert Greasely) and two sons (born Jun 1926 and Jun 1928).

Berfore she married she may have been a nurse aid at a local hospital, around 1918 at about 25 years of age. She gave birth to my Grandmother, Constance Yvonne Roebuck on 31/12/1919.
I would like to know the name of the hospital where she may have worked and any information regarding her familywould be greatly appreciated.

I can only help you with the names of the 2 main hospitals in Barnsley at that time.
Becketts Hospital which closed down in the 1980's and St Helens Hospital which was demolished and then rebuilt and renamed Barnsley and District General Hospital.

Hi Jayfa
Welcome to rootschat.    Do you know if her children are still living?  We are very careful not to publish details of living people on rootschat so if they are still alive let me know and I will remove the details for you - or you can do so yourself using the modify button at the top of the post.  Then click save.
There is a family living in Royston, Yorkshire in 1901 with a Dorothy of the right age but no sister Constance - a brother Gordon age 2 though.  Parents Fred and Hannah.  Could that be the right one?
Really you need her marriage certificate to confirm her father's name.  Registered in Barnsley Oct 1925 9c 470.
However I think we are on the right track as her birth is registered in Dewsbury Apr 1893 9b 657 and the previous year we have a marriage for Fred Roebuck to Hannah hirst.  Apr 1892 Dewsbury 9b 995

Hi Andrea and Carolanne

Thank you for your prompt responses.

I am unsure if Dorothy's sons are still alive, so I will remove their names, I had presumed they weren't.
I do believe that you are on the right track. I have also found out today that Dorothy died in 1971 at 78 years of age.
My nana (Constance Yvonne Roebuck) is Dorothy's (illegitimate) daughter.
The name Fred seems familiar, but Hannah must have died before my nana was born or when she was too young to remember her. Nana also spoke of an Auntie Connie (Constance) whom she was named after, I had only presumed that she was Dorothy's sister.
The reason I asked about the hospitals is that Dorothy worked as a nurse aid. My nana was only told that her father was a Scottish Doctor. I am trying to find out who he was and what happened to him. I am presuming that Dorothy may have met him through working with him at the hospital.
There is no mention of the father's name on my nana's birth certificate.
I am also interested in any other information on Fred or Hannah.
Thank you for your time

1901 census Rg13 4309 111 57
Midland Rd Royston
Fred Roebuck 32 Colliery banksman b Barnsley
Hannah 31 b Liversedge
Dorothy 8
Gordon 2 both b Royston

With luck you should be able to find both Fred and Hannah on the 1881 census which is free to search on ancestry.co.uk and familysearch.  You might need to get their marriage certificate to confrim their fathers' names though.
