Osney House

G'Day, I was fortunate enough to find my father's sister in the 1911 Census that was available for a short time recently. She was born in Suffolk and I have always assumed that she and my father were sent from the Plomersgate Union to the same place - to Crowborough in Sussex. However, I have found her in Oxford but have been unable to find out anything about the place to which she was sent and wondered if anyone could help or point me in the right direction. The address on the transcription was shown as OSNEY HOUSE 8 ST THOMA'S HOME ST THOMA'S OXFORD( I'm not shouting, I have written it as received, including the punctuation!). The establishment was, I believe, a convent school. Any help would be appreciated. Oldfeller, Adelaide, South Australia

Have a look at this
"St Thomas the Martyr Parochial School in Osney Lane" http://www.oxfordsoftwaredocumentation.com/woca/WOLHG.html
Is this the right place? http://www.oxfordsoftwaredocumentation.com/woca/history/St%20Thomas%20the%20Martyr%20booklet%20compressed%202.jpg

Hi,
We have also found a relative at Osney House (Sister of Mercy) and can see one of the other nuns was from Australia in the page we have saved. Our relative was Maude Axe.
I have a copy of the original Census shett if of interest.
Regards
Nigel and Sheila

G'Day Nigel and Sheila, My aunt, Queenie South, was at Osney House as an inmate. She and my father were born at Friston, in Suffolk, and sent from there. My father, Raymond South, went to a family ( Mephams ) in Crowborough , Suffolk. There was no family connection there as far as I have been able to discover. There was obviously no attempt to try and keep family members together in those days. What surprises me is that they were sent so far from their birthplace. I wonder why? The book by Liz Woolley looks interesting but I haven't been able to find out any more about it. I have a printout of the transcript for the page that Queenie is on but a copy of the original would be lovely. Oldfeller Adelaide, South Australia.

Hi Oldfellow,
There are no Souths in the transcript I have for the 1911 census, sorry. There was someone from Victoria, Australia but that person is called Ensor.
If we find anything else out about Osney we will let you know.
Regards
Nigel
