Rockingham Forest
« on: Sunday 04 January 09 18:26 UTC (UK) »

Hello All,
Does anyone have info on the names of people connected to Rockingham Forest in the 200 years since the Conqueror arrived?
I'm particularly interested in any records naming Verderers etc.
I appreciate this is very much a long shot!
Thanks,
Bob

There are a number of entries concerning Rockingham Forest in British History Online for example

http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=40220

https://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=84581

Other relevant information can be found at:

http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/John-Knyvet

It should be worth contacting the archivist at Northamptonshire Record Office.  This was until 1991 located in Delapre Abbey and back in the 14th century the Abbess at Delapre was a member of the Knyvet family who were keepers of part of Rockingham Forest.

Other possible sources are Oundle School, and Lyveden New Bield although both of these are probably too late for what you are searching.  Rockingham Castle is privately owned and so unlikely to help.

There are also a number of publications which contain information about medieval industry in Rockingham Forest.

Am I right in thinking Rockingham Castle might hold some records if your family are mentioned there?

I can always visit Rockingham...I was born just down the road!

That's very kind of you,  Reaybo
My interest in Rockingham Forest is as follows:
There is a suggestion that when the Conqueror came to England some of his Verderers were possibly progenitors of the Armstrongs.
There is evidence of Armstrongs in this capacity in Cumbrian forests, & I wondered if the surname appeared in connection with Rockingham?
The Armstrong surname doesn't appear until the early 1200's in Cumbria, & is extremely scarce in central England even in the 17th C.
I don't know what name these 11th & 12th century verderers would go by before the surname was attached, so probably an impossible research task!
Cheers
