William Few
« on: Monday 05 January 09 19:45 UTC (UK) »

Hello all,
In Wentworth Church, nr Sutton, Cambs is the tombstone of my GG grandparents. It says

In Memory of Elizabeth Clay the beloved wife of William Few who died November 10th 1887 aged 47 years.

Also of the above William Few who died April 17th 1890 aged 56 years.

I am having trouble identifying which of the many William Fews he is and how he connects to the other Fews of the area, though there are several contenders but I can't be certain of any even with the help of a contact who has been consulting AJ Gautrey.
Kind Regards
Briannicus

Hi

Welcome to Rootschat  Cheesy

Who are the possibles you are looking at?
Also their marriage certificate would hopefully give his father's name. And have you found them on censuses? This would give place of birth.

Couldn't resist looking on censuses - he consistently gives his birthplace as Willingham. In 51 he is in Wentworth with parents William and Sarah. If you need census details say and I will post them for you.

If you check the 1881 census on www.familysearch.org you'll find William was 47 born Willingham, living at Wentworth, a farmer of 130 acres

The baptism index on the Cambs FHS website at http://www.cfhs.org.uk/Search.html doesn't show him, so it seems as though he wasn't baptised.

However the 1851 census index on the same site has William Few 48 farmer of 130 acres; Sarah wife 40; Phoebe 20; William 17; Richard 14; Elliott Smith nephew 7. All born Willingham living at Wentworth

You need the 1859 marriage cert the others found to confirm his father was William

Thank you all very much for the useful information.

So far I have no certificates nor have I seen any census records as I have been working from family information and then decided to try and take it back one step further.

Most of what you have written confirms my findings and I suspect we now have the man, son of William and Sarah, and husband of Eliza Clay Scott. They married Sept. 13 1859 in the Countess of Huntingdon Free Church, Chapel, St., Ely and had a child, Emily Mary, my G grandmother.

Thank you janan, I would love the census details if it's not too much bother for you.

Thanks again everyone, you've been very helpful.

Hi

David has given you the link to find William and Elizabeth in 1881 census. The site is free and extremely useful for baptisms and marriages as well but beware of submitted entries, the extracted ones are usually reliable.

Here they are in 1871

Hall St Soham

Eliza C Few Wife 30 Cambs Ely
Walter S Few Son 11 Scholar Cambs Ely

Wm Jno Few Son 5 Soham
Sarah C Few Daur 9mo Soham
Emma Starling Serv Unm 22 Housemaid Cambs Isleham
Sarah Starling Serv 13 Nursemaid Isleham
RG10/1601/4 Pg1

I can't find them in 1861 but here is William in 1851

High St Wentworth

Sarah do Wife 40 Farmer's Wife
Pheobe do Daur 20 Farmer's Daur at Home

Thanks for that, Jan. Brilliant.
I'm slowly putting this all together as someone sent me a digital copy of Gautrey's 'Fews of Cambridgeshire' yesterday, and someone else responded with information from the Wentworth Church register, so I have lots to be getting on with.
Thanks again

Hi Jan

Thanks again.

That Emily Mary you mention is my G grandmother. I have a nice photo of her as a young woman. Her husband, my G grandfather, William Brown Hunt, tragically died aged only 30 (apparently from tuberculosis) only two weeks after Emily Mary buried her father in Wentworth Church (tombstone still there and legible). Life was rough back then.

Hi Jan
Two things:
1) Sorry but I made a mistake in my initial email. William's wife's name was Eliza Clay Scott, not Elizabeth.
2) Do you happen to know what the do in the census returns you've give me mean. I've tried to come with an answer but so far...
Thanks
Brian

Hi Brian

Eliza and Elizabeth often seem to be interchangeable so not something to worry about. Do (shortened form of ditto as David mentioned) is as it appears on census images instead of the " we now tend to use.

Sorry I have no connection with your family just enjoy looking for other people's families - it is what Rootschat is all about. In return I've received masses of help with my own families.

Happy hunting
