Happy to help Brian.
Still can't find them in 61
I can see Eliza in 51 though - do you have this? Say if not and I'll post

Hi Jan, I have them in 41, 71, and 91. You gave me some of 51 but it didn't include Eliza so if you have her under something else it would great to have that along with the mysterious 61 and the missing 81 if that's easy for you, that is.
Somewhere along the line they seem to have moved to Soham (Newmarket area, I believe) and then back - or something like that. Could it be that they appear there.
Anyway, whatever you find is always appreciated as I still don't really understand where to go to EXACTLY for these returns. Got lost on the link David sent me afraid.
Thanks again, Brian

1881 census - www.familysearch.org - click on Search Records at the top - then on Census down the left hand side. In the drop down list in the Census box click on 1881 British Census. Type in First Name William, Last Name Few. Click Search. You should get 43 names, yours is number 18. Then click on William Few which will take you to a detail page, then click on Household at top right
Then play around with the original page to get used to it, add birth country and county etc which will narrow down the number of hits you get.
With 1881 being available free we don't usually type it out ourselves when people can do their own lookups. For most of the other censuses you have to subscribe to one or other of the organisations that provides the images eg www.ancestry.co.uk
You should also check out the Cambs FHS site at http://www.cfhs.org.uk/Search.html which provides a wealth of information, including census indexes, relating to Cambs

Is it possible that in 1861 they were living in Ely, where they married? If so most of the Ely 1861 census was destroyed in flooding, so that might be why Jan can't find them
In 1851 Eliza Clay Scott would only have been 10, long before she married: 1851 HO107/1764 folio 559 Downham Lane, St Mary in Ely Henley Barlow Scott head 39 Solicitors wring clerk b Ely Sarah Ware Scott wife 36 b Mepal Cambs Benjamin Cole Scott son 12 scholar b Ely Sarah Ann Scott dau 11 scolar b Ely Eliza Clay Scott dau 10 scholar b Ely Emily Scott dau 7 scholar b Ely Robert Scott son 5 b Ely Caroline Scott dau 3 b Ely Eleanor Scott dau 2 b Ely Arthur Scott son 7mths b Ely Emma Susan Newnham servant unmarr 17 General servant b Reach Cambs

You've saved my typing fingers there with the 51 David - but it should be Eliza Clay not Cole. The family seem very keen on using surnames as middle names. Thanks for the explanation re 61 - was going nuts looking

Gosh, I'm overwhelmed by how kind and helpful everyone is on this site. What can I say except that I'm very, very grateful to you all, especially David and Jan.
Thank you all so much, you've positively restored my rather jaundiced view of humanity.
I have been sent a digital version of A J Gautrey's 'The Fews of Cambridge' and have painstakingly laid it out so that the children are all tabled clearly. It is now much easier to read and to extract the information. I'm going to footnote my findings when I'm completely clear about them, so if any of you would like to have a copy let me know and I'll email it to you (though how we do that without telling the world and his wife our emails I have no idea.
Thanks again,
Brian
