Roche grave Kilnarath
« on: Tuesday 06 January 09 03:34 UTC (UK) »

Hi, and happy new year everyone. I was wondering how to find a grave inscription. I am after the grave of Nicholas Roche buried in  Kilnarath and was buried on the 8th Dec., 1816. and His wife Mrs. Letitia Roche of Vancluse died on 11th March 1833
and is buried at "KILNERATH".
I am hoping it mentions his fathers name on the grave stone or a brother possibly.
does anyone know where Vancluse is/was?
cheers

There is some information about Kilnerath graveyard at this site. It seems it has recently been cleaned up and restored. Also there is a mention of grave inscriptions so perhaps if you contact a member of the committee responsible they may be able to give you further leads.

Hi,
The headstone inscriptions for Kilnerath are available from Tipperary libraries, local studies section. They are extremely helpful, even for an over the phone query. I am sure you already have this information, Nicholas Roche of Vauchluce was married to Leticia Stepney, the widow of Herbert Stepney of Abington in 1800 in Newport, Co. Tipperary. Vauchluce is a hunting lodge situated on the Limerick side of the Limerick Tipperary border just of the road between Newport and Rearcross, in the townland of Toorolougher, Murroe, Co. Limerick. I have an interest in local history and would love to hear more from the Roche families time in the area.

Thanks for that information, yes I was hoping, that the head stone might reveal who the Father of Nicholas Roche was. which would allow me to get to the next stage of research, but its proving a little difficult.
I have Letitia  Roche as stepney nee: Bourke. they were land owners in the area and I have some copies of the original land deeds (a few of them) up until  1832/3 when Edward and his wife Maria Theresa  sailed to Sydney.  I didn`t know it was  a hunting lodge not  a little town or village.
