Richard Ticehurst (base born)...Look up please.
« on: Tuesday 06 January 09 17:43 UTC (UK) »

Richard Ticehurst was born 20/7/1783.

He was baptised/registered alongside two other children, who were the children of James Ticehurst and Abigail Pierce.

In the East Sussex Records, Richard is recorded as 'base born  son of Ann'.

Who was Ann ?......sister or sister in law of James?

As Richard was a Ticehurst it seems likely to have been a family thing.

Anyone have access too, or visiting to view, the Barstady Bonds records, who would look kindly upon my problem,  and have a look for me....please !  Sad

Regards

Hi Jard

You don't say where in East Sussex Richard was born?

Did you know many bastardy bonds can be found on the A2A website http://www.a2a.org.uk/search/index.asp

Hi Kerry
Thanks for your response.
As far as I know, my Richard Ticehurst was born in Eastbourne. His baptism, along with the children of James Ticehurst and Abigail Pierce baptism, would have been at St.Mary's.
I have looked at the A2A site but can't see any reference to Richard or his mother Ann.

On family search I just found James Ticehurst born 1753 at Jevington married Abigail Pierce there 1778, although that marriage I did not find on Sussex Marriage Index.  Need a second look.

Funnily enough an Ann Ticehurst married Edward Miller of Eastbourne at Jevington on 1 July 1783  Undecided

No marriage definitely not on Sussex Marriage Index and I have just noticed the Family Search entry is submitted not extracted, presumably they did marry as they had children seen on the parish registers.  Undecided

I have searched high and low for any info regarding James Ticehurst and Abigail Pierce, but there are no records anywhere. Every entry is a 'member submitted'. There is nothing on the SMI.

As before...the baptism/registration entry in St Mary's shows as;-

James.....b 21/11/1779  son of James Ticehurst and Abigail Pierce
Samuel...b 18/7/1786    son of James Ticehurst and Abigail Pierce
Barbara..b 18/3/1783    daughter of James Ticehurst and Abigail Pierce
Richard...b 20/7/1783    base born  son of Ann

There are only two option I think
1. James had a child outside his marriage by a woman called Ann and Abigail excepted it into her family.....or

2. Ann was a sister of James who had the child (Richard) and he was baptised along with the others to avoid family embarassment

I think the only place where Richard's father (or parents) would be listed is in the parish bastardy bonds.  I think the parish would be either Eastbourne St Mary or Jevington.

Hi Jard

I had a good search on the IGI last night and as you say they are member submitted records.  I think maybe then that James and Abigail married outside Sussex, maybe Abigail was not from Sussex.

I agree that either Eastbourne St Mary or Jevington should include Richard's parents in the bastardy bonds.  My money is on Ann being James's sister.

Thanks again Kerry
So pleased you are of the same opinion as me about Ann being James's sister because that's the avenue I have been following for a while now.

Just another of those brick walls until I can some info from the Bastady Bond entries. Just hope someone goes there one day and feels sorry for me  Undecided

Well if nobody else goes for you, I am sure I will be making a visit at some point in the next couple of months, I usually like to go over at least 3 times a year.

Hi Jard

Well I had a thoroughly frustrating morning at ESRO today and I am very sorry but didn't manage to find much at all.

I did see the baptism for Richard Ticehurst at St Marys Eastbourne on 16 July 1783, son of Ann, baseborn.

I didn't manage to find a marriage for James and Abigail at all and can only guess they were married outside Sussex.  Don't suppose you know where Abigail came from?

I did happen to ntoce in the Jevington parish register
Ann Ticehurst, baptised 13 July 1756, daughter of John and Mary but wondered if she was too old??

Might be worth further investigation though.  Undecided

Hi Kerry
Thank you so much for having a look for me. It was great of you to spend some of your time on my problem. I bet you're very nice  Kiss

Sorry I don't know where Abigail Pierce came from. I spent such a lot of time trying to find a marriage record in the Eastbourne and Jevington areas, and as soon as I found the.... 'base born, son of Ann'..... entry for Richard Ticehurst, I gave up on her.
I'll keep looking for my Ann. Maybe it's the one who married Edward
Millar, or  one born in 1756....Huh??    As regards Richard Ticehurst....There must be a bastardy record of him somewhere.........
Drives you mad   dosen't it !!

Thanks again

Hi Jard,

The original Jevington marriage register, not transcripts, records the marriage of James TICEHURST and Abigail PEARCE 24 December 1778, witnesses John & William Bridgeman. They were married by banns which were called 22 Nov, 29 Nov & 6 Dec.

James was either of the parish of East Dean or Eastbourne. I need to double check that.

Abigail was of Jevington parish and the Pearce/Pierce family is a very old established Jevington family, one of the first families to be mentioned in the 1538 register.

Ann TICEHURST married Edward MILLER 1 July 1783 at Jevington, both otp, witnesses Fanny Ticehurst & William Ballard. Whether this was your Ann is debatable. I think it probably that she is Ann dau of John & Mary who was bap at Jevington 13 July 1756. That would make her 27 yrs on her marriage and I can't find another Ann Ticehurst in the parish.

There is also the marriage of William TICEHURST & Ann SANTHOR/SANTHER at Jevington both otp. This does not appear in the marriage register but has been entered by error by the rector in the register of baptisms and burials.

I don't recall any bastardy records for Richard but will check.

I hope this may be useful. You may be able to link some of the names to see if they are the same family.
