Clear up and maybe a little color please?

This is my great grandmother, Agnes McGowan from Dumries Scotland. She died in 1881 at the age of 54. Any ideas as to approximately when this pic may have been taken?

Hi Brenda, the fussy frilly look of the clothing suggests mid-late 1870s...her hairstyle looks like it's from an earlier time but since we can't see under the bonnet, it's anybody's guess Wink

Any printing on the bottom of the card or on the back? Designs, photographer's name etc...they're all clues. If you could scan the entire thing for us including the back (doesn't have to be large) we might be able to narrow it down a bit...

OH,,,I have tears in my eyes. These are so beautiful everyone!! I am in awe of you all. China, I don't have the original and don't know who does. I have a black and white pic that someone actually took of the original picture. The copy of the original was taken in the 1970's. Sure wish I could be of more help.

Agree with China,1870's but I would go for early rather than late.I believe this
lady is in mourning attire,black lace around her bonnet and crepe edged black jacket.

Do you mean the filmy-looking stuff kind of piled on the top and sides of the bonnet, Jim?

It could be, but then she'd be in the final stages of mourning as her dress is so much lighter than the jacket...the dress would be mauve or gray most likely...

I don't think there was a strict etiquette with regards to mourning wear but
the 2nd. year she would probably be wearing more lace,jewelery.The dress most certainly dark colour.My thought was 1st. anniversary.

There sure was. The only thing you could get away with was current fashion...but it had to be the right colour (black), the right material (crape...the Courtaulds family business was built on this nasty material), the right amount (every article of clothing except hankie...and sometimes even the widow's bed was draped with crape & black ribbon stitched to underwear), the right time frame (a year and a day for the first stage for a spouse & a parent)...at the end of the first year came a second year when certain colours such as gray or purple could be added. Prior to this, there was no jewelry worn, and later in the mourning period it could be worn only if it didn't sparkle.

If another relative died in the meantime, the mourning period was extended the appropriate amount.

So. looking at this photo, I'm not completely convinced that the lady is in mourning. If she is, it's going to be at the very last stage. IMHO

I am not sure about the mourning thing. I do know all her children survived her beyond the 1900's. Her husband, after her death, immigrated to the US with all but one of the children. Agnes also died before her mother did, by about 9 months. Now I am not sure about her father. I haven't to date been able to ascertain his date of death. Would they have dressed "for the occasion" for aunts, uncles, grandparents, and cousins?

Oh yes, but for varying and lesser time periods...nine months for a child, six for a sibling, three for aunt/uncle, niece/nephew, a year for a parent, six weeks for a first cousin. With children I think it may have had something to do with the age of the child...for an infant it was only a few weeks.

It wasn't set in stone, all this mourning stuff. It was socially expected but there was leeway...a run of deaths in a family, particularly from some communicable disease, could have a family in mourning for years. Also, widows often had to remarry quickly, for support, and did so well within the mourning period. So it could be flexible, but still there was convention to be followed.

Some of the customs were pure superstition, such as covering mirrors with black crape or carrying a corpse out of the house feet first....stopping the clocks and drawing the curtains. And some were started and fuelled by greedy purveyors of mourning attire, such as it being "unlucky" to keep a mourning dress after the mourning period had passed. Death was a huge industry and there were literally "warehouses" full of mourning paraphernalia to equip oneself with, such as crosses, memorial jewelry, ribbons, photos and even teapots.

Good riddance to all that, I say

Guess I had never thought about it much. Funny how over the years some things change so drastically. All of this has got me searching for Agnes father now, so I can see if this could be what was going on. No luck yet, but going to keep on searching. I have been looking at OPR's all morning on SP. Thanks for the history lesson.
